Mixed bag 3 May 2011
These "Sugar" series of CDs are really very good. Sassy Sugar purports to be Nashville rock'n'roll, but many of the tracks are really uptempo country (and none the worse for that). Although not as consistently good as its predecessors, Heavy Sugar and Savvy Sugar, This collection has a hard core of real gems, including the first recording of rockabilly Jimmy Isle, superb obscurities like Danny Wolfe and Ray Melton, and classic artists like Red Foley, Webb Pierce and the always superb Gene Vincent. More in this series, please

As might be expected from a set of rock'n'roll cut in Nashville this one if full of high school pop.A surprise entry here is a previous version of the song associated with Johnny Restivo-The Shape I'm In by one Kerry Lee Martin.
Note also track 20 by Andy Anderson & the Rolling Stones.
Should also point out that in spite of the sleeve notes naming the Lloyd Cowboy Copas song My little Red Wagon as his only foray into RnR the writer the usually pretty accurate Stuart Colman seems to have overlooked Circle Rock which was done at the same time for Dot

Sassy Sugar 30 July 2011
Another excellent entry in the Fantastic Voyage label's 'Sugar' series. As the title says 'The Pure Essence of Nashville Rock & Roll'.
The boxed set includes Rock n Roll, Rockabilly, Hillbilly and a couple of Country/pop tracks thrown in for good measure. Possibly not for fans of the slick" production, and pop music structures of the 'Nashville Sound' although there will always be a slight crossover element with the music that was being produced by the RCA & Columbia labels during the late 50's and early 60's. The booklet provided will be of interest to anyone interested in the history of music.
