Product Description

Joe Ma directs this remake of the cult 1972 Japanese exploitation film 'Joshuu 701 Go Sasori' directed by Ito Shunya, itself a live-action adaptation of the 1970s manga series by Toru Shinohara. Miki Mizuno stars as Matsushima Nami, a beautiful young housewife who is falsely accused of murder and sent to spend the rest of her life in the most brutal and squalid of prisons, where she falls victim to any number of inhuman cruelties. Later she manages to escape and makes it her business to exact a gruesome revenge on those who double-crossed her, training to fight with a mysterious mountain hermit known as the Corpse Collector (Simon Yam) and renaming herself 'Sasori' ('Scorpion').

2.0 out of 5 stars Grindhouse for the modern era? 20 Oct 2009
By DeeJay
Format:DVD
If thats the case ill stop watching them tomorrow. This - an update of the grindhouse classic Female Prisoner Scorpion series- is an extremely poor "re-imagining", replacing the grit and exploitation of the original, with silly Matrix-esque fight scenes and even a training montage....yes! A training montage!

What was originally a tale of bitter revenge is lost through unrealistic fight scenes (girls are sent flying through the air ala Agent Smith) and incredibly silly deaths. Can you really rip off a girls stapled bald patch and stab another girl in the neck with it? I'd guess no, no matter how many staples it had. If the whole tone of the movie was tongue in cheek, or more outlandish, then it just might work, however we are meant to empathise with the girls plight, and it's a bit hard when your stiffling giggles.

I guess some of the exploitation is there, but it's just so weak. The 'sadistic warden who is after sexual favours from the girls' (TM) is no great shakes in this day and age, and the kick boxing, mud fights (in a cage no less!) are as silly as they sound, made even sillier though, by our heroine learning to fight simply by watching them. It just never comes across as all that seedy/gritty and doesn't touch the first 5 minutes of the original, that saw the female prisoners walking up and down the stairs totally naked, as the gaurds stood underneath to ensure they weren't hiding anything about their person.

Perhaps if you haven't seen the originals you could be more lenient with this movie, but I feel that even on its own merits its pretty weak, the tone throughout is just too uneven, and the leading lady doesn't have the presence to carry off such a role.

At best, I think this could be a guilty pleasure for some. Mainly those that want to see the bald patch scene I mention above, lol. For the rest of us who have seen the originals? I'd say avoid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Manga 28 Jun 2010
By Dan
Format:DVD
Check your brain at the door...

Nice ladies (in wet t-shirt and slow motion - well may be not slow motion, but that would have been a nice touch), blood and violence...run of the mill Manga - not great, but not bad either.
