THE DOCTOR WOULD BE PROUD,
By Mr. D. L. Rees "LEE DAVID" (DORSET) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete Series 2 Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
Very enjoyable. Sarah Jane continues repeatedly to save the planet, at an age most would choose to slow down a bit. As in Season 1, she is aided by son Luke (IQ off the charts and he himself special in a way unique) and streetwise Clyde. Their young friend Maria is now in Washington with her dad (he played by Joseph Millson who went on to be Raoul in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies"). She is replaced by resourceful Rani, her own father a headmaster but pleasant nonetheless.Six more two part adventures. Despite fearsome aliens, many viewers may find the clowns most alarming. (Bradley Walsh impresses in a new slant on the Pied Piper story.) As before, Sarah Jane's sonic lipstick (a gift from The Doctor) proves a boon. Foolishly she still leaves a spare key under the flowerpot. (No prizes for guessing what happens.) Elisabeth Sladen delights as Sarah Jane (especially for those with memories of her escapades about thirty years ago). There is a flashback glimpse of The Doctor (in David Tennant mode), not to mention the reappearance of The Unit's Brigadier, he now with a walking stick. Often in television series nowadays music is intrusive, an irritant. Here, though, Sam Watts' score ideally complements. Less acceptable are the trailers before closing credits. They spoil. Bonuses include a very funny Comic Relief sketch, but it can only be seen after correct answers to a quiz. In short, there is much to please fans young and old. Great.

Sarah Jane Steps Up Her Game!!!,
By
This review is from: The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete Series 2 Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
Following the huge success of the first series, it was always going to be difficult for The Sarah Jane Adventures to improve with its second series.Does it pull it off? Almost. THE LAST SONTARAN sees the return of Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen), Luke (Thomas Knight), Clyde (Daniel Anthony) and Maria (Yasmin Paige). Also, the Sontarans make a well-deserved comeback with Anthony O'Donnell delivering his Kaagh lines very well indeed. This story has a lot of tension in it, which is helped by really good music. However, Maria leaves at the end... Rani (Anjli Mohindra) makes a cofident, if slightly flawed debut in THE DAY OF THE CLOWN, a truly chilling tale of clowns. Bradley Walsh does a brilliant job playing three different characters, plus we also get more brilliant scenes between Tom and Lis. SECRETS OF THE STARS follows, as the Ancient Lights prepare to take over the starsigns. It's an intriguing premise, with a brilliant cliffhanger, and a powerful, and slightly mad performance from Russ Abbot as Mr Trueman. Clyde finally takes centre stage, in THE MARK OF THE BERSERKER, as his Dad (Gary Beadle) turns up again. What follows is a magnificent story in which an alien pendant that makes people do whatever you want them to finds its way around Paul Langer's neck, with disastrous consequences. Incredible acting all round, with Anjli's acting improving. THE TEMPTATION OF SARAH JANE SMITH, possibly the best story, features the return of the Trickster, as he lures Sarah Jane back to 1951, on the day that her parents die. However, don't go dismissing is as another Father's Day, as this delivers big time. Except maybe the kid playing Oscar, who I couldn't stop laughing at. As the series reaches its finale, ENEMY OF THE BANE, Mrs Wormwood (Samantha Bond) and Kaggh the Sontaran return to find the mysterious Horath. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane teams up with the Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney) to find Horath, as well. It's a slightly disappointing finale to be fair, due to it not feeling like a finale, and the Brigadier being severely underused. Overall, it is a very good series from CBBC. Look out for Series 3 in September, with the Mona Lisa, Judoon, and a certain Doctor...

Incredible drama for a kids' show,
This review is from: The Sarah Jane Adventures - The Complete Series 2 Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
I'm a huge Doctor Who fan and have watched every (surviving) episode and all the spin-offs. 'The Sarah-Jane Adventures' is by far the best spin-off from Doctor Who, eclipsing Torchwood in its quality and entertainment value. It's not just kids' television at all - it's as family-drama as Doctor Who, issues dealt with in exactly the same approach - not with kid gloves, but by dealing with kids' issues. Not to mention funny, delightful scripts - including 'The Temptation of Sarah-Jane Smith', one of Elisabeth Sladen's finest television moments. This series is already into its fourth chapter and a fifth on the way - I've watched it twice over already (and my favourite film is Kill Bill, so go figure).
