Book Description

2 Nov 2008
A gripping love story in which the ties of family and homeland conflict with the desire to forge a new life and direction. Janna, a doctor working in London and becoming increasingly involved with investment banker Dan, is determined not to get drawn into the unfolding tragedy befalling her native Sarajevo. But her parents remain there, in serious danger. And the brutal war doesn't allow for forgetting, and she finds herself - despite everything she is working for - unable to escape her past and the consequences of her country's history.

Product Description

From the Author

Sarabande is fiction. Pure fiction. I have to state this upfront as a number of people who read the book and who do not know me asked whether this is autobiographical. It isn't. None of the main characters exist in real life, though many could have existed. Sarajevo, however, exists and is once again beautiful and peaceful. When I arrived at Sarajevo Airport many years ago and drove down what once used to be Sniper Alley, the city was still scarred, there were bombed-out buildings, visible destruction. But the biggest scars I found were psychological scars. Everyone I met had suffered, had lost relatives or friends. And yet, sitting in the many Cafes, I found people friendly, open and immensely positive. I realised, I had to write about Sarajevo, about the war and the tragedy that happened in the middle of Europe.

In early 2008 I decided to add another chapter to the book, and called it "Preface". Please see below how Sarabande begins:

4.0 out of 5 stars Sarabande 11 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
Sarabande is a heart wrenching story of a young woman's struggle to maintain her strict pacifist views while caught in the middle of a war that has hit her home town and killed many of her childhood friends. The movie script style of the writing is a unique style that makes the scenes easily visualized. This story brings out important issues about the consequences of war in a time that is filled with wars that have ripped apart the middle east.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book 1 Jan 2012

The story of struggle between your moral values and horrors of war, love and hate, Hope and despair. It can happen anywhere in the world. Because it is easy to talk about pacifism in the peace time when nobody is shooting at you. But in the madness of war it's very hard to hold to your principles. It is very a sad story but the life of Sarajevans during the siege was every sadder and more tragic. It also shows their incredible strength and unbelievable resilience to be admired . Must read for everybody who wants to get real inside into human soul during the war

"Sarabande" - the amazing Cello Suite No2 in D-minor by Johann Sebastian Bach prepares the connoisseurs of classical music for an utterly sad and painful human experience, but also one full of warmth and unbearable longing. These musical themes introduce the reader to a "gravitational" love story between Dan and Janna and a basic debate of war and pacifism as in the example of Sarajevo in 1992.

Both characters, Janna and Dan, are highly intelligent and intellectual and share a profound sense for art and beauty. The protagonist Janna impresses through her great commitment to humanity and honesty. She combines softness with a very tough and hands on approach to life. In retrospect and through the loving eyes of Dan, Janna appears as a heroic icon. In the end she, the dedicated pacifist, abandons her humanistic principles and gives in to violence.

Marcus Fedder's novel "Sarabande" is a good read: the war scenes in Sarajevo are gripping and realistically shocking, very impressive especially the parallels between great humanity and brutality at the same time and same place in Sarajevo. Only when it comes to the love between Janna and Dan could the language be more imaginative and passionate.
