BBC Review

As likely to be listening to Wilco as Willie Nelson, Sara Watkins' eclectic credentials as a member of Nickel Creek were never in doubt.

With that band having disappeared under the radar, she steps out with a confident stride with her debut solo release, preserving those broad tastes and good judgement when it comes to choosing a set.

As producer, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones ensures there's both fluency and muscularity across the board, consolidating the artistic relationship that began when they toured as part of the Mutual Admiration Society in 2004.

The tenderness of the self-penned My Friend could almost be another instalment of Nickel Creek's Doubting Thomas (from Why Should The Fire Die 2005) with Michael Witcher's sublime dobro articulating that sense of stoic grace in the face of pressure and doubt.

Songs by Tom Waits and relative newcomer David Gazra nestles alongside venerable writers such as Norman Blake and Jimmie Rodgers (the smoochy, pedal-steel kick back of his Any Old Time is a real gem here) underscores that Watkins is working with living, breathing music.

An assured debut that will undoubtedly extend her commercial reach even further, there's an understated approach with no hints of showy grandstanding or cheap-shot appeal. Watkins' time in the spotlight is a triumph with her agile playing and the kind of voice that gives your goosebumps the shivers.

On the moving album closer, her vocals hover above gently murmuring electric guitars, a shimmering, imploring presence. ''When my voice no longer soothes you / Where will we be?'' Prepare to have you jaw on the way to the floor with this one. --Sid Smith

Product Description

The debut solo album from the singer and fiddle player formerly with Nickel Creek. Sara Watkins's self-titled debut, eagerly anticipated by the significant fan base she's built after nearly two decades as fiddle player and vocalist for Grammy Award-winning trio Nickel Creek, boasts and easygoing virtuosity. The youthful Watkins, who joined Nickel Creek when she was barely in her teens, displays formidable skill as a multi-instrumentalist, playing the guitar and ukelele as well as the fiddle, and is just as versatile, and breathtakingly mature, as a singer. Watkins incorporates folk, country, gospel and pop into her 14 song set, produced by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. Her self-penned fiddle songs are exuberant, foot stamping instrumentals, while her songs for which she wrote both the lyrics and music have a heart-meltingly lovelorn quality. Watkins knows how to channel in her own work the plaintive emotions of classic country and timeless pop.

5.0 out of 5 stars album of my year 23 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is a beautiful album. It's in the country/folk vein, and if you like Wailin Jennys and Alison Krauss you will love it. More accessible and mainstream than Nickel Creek, it showcases Sara's voice with a cascade of lovely material and inspiring arrangements. There is not one bad track here; too many highlights to single out one or two.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not great 21 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm a fan of much of her previous work and I recognise that she is a great talent. However many of the songs on this collection fail to do much for me. Not a lot going on melodically and the arrangements are all a bit middle of the road. The live solo versions I've seen her doing on Youtube are fantastic - I wish she'd gone with that rather than let the producer make his mark so cklearly heard. I will buy her next album simply because I'm hoping for better, but so far this CD hasn't been played sincve the first week of purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solo Debut fron Nickel Creek Violinist. 26 May 2009

After 18 years as the Violinist with Nickel Creek, definitely worth a listen, Sara has at last plunged in and released a solo album. Aided by her former Nickel Creek partners and a host of equally talented musicians she shows just what she can do.
Very enjoyable. Give it a try

4.0 out of 5 stars quality 3 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
A very good album from the ex-Nickel Creek fiddler. Sensitively produced by John Paul Jones it includes an excellent mixture of styles and moods, with some intersting guest appearances.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just one great song. 12 July 2011

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Stupidly bought this CD because I loved that song: long hot summers day. Only to find out that she actually did not write this and all other songs are not really for me.
