SAPPHIRE R9 290 Tri-X has 2560 stream processing units and an engine clock of up to 1000 Mhz. Also equipped with 4GB of the latest high performance GDDR5 memory on a 512-bit interface and clocked at 1300 MHz (5.2GHz effective).
R9 290 for under £300? Reason I bought 2. This card is a monster, powers BF4 maxxed out at 1080p at a frame rate of 90. Surprisingly cool too, at stock clocks, the card reached only 66c. Easily beats the GTX 780 which is priced a lot higher than this! If you manage to over clock this to 1200+ on the core and 1450+ on the memory, congrats coz you have a card that's as powerful as the 780 Ti!. Easily the best choice I've ever made in regards to upgrading my PC. One of these will max out any game at 1080p for the next couple of years. Really happy with its performance and temperature! The reference R9 290 reached 95 in game, and though my cards are clocked @ 1000/1450, they've never gone over 80c which is truly unbelievable especially since 95c for the reference card was regarded as safe by AMD! Which leave loads of headroom when over clocking! All in all, this card is more than enough for 1080p, two of these are amazing for 1440, and they are much cheaper than their Nvidia equivalents! Alhamdulillah, these cards run in my system without any problems, crossfire works as expected but in games like BF4, crossfire crashes the game which is expected since BF4 is 90% bug, 10% game. Also, crossfire without crossfire bridges = so cool.

There are some niggling issues which quite frankly are a pain in the ass to deal with (for example heat issues, some software issues particularly having to disable ULPS - see below). Back in January 2014, I needed a new GFX card for my high spec gaming rig (I had a 7990HD but I wanted to sell it on because that thing was too hot). Ideally I wanted 2x780GTX but the prices were so stupidly high and after much online research I decided to go for a pair of Zotac 770GTX from Novatech (which was available at offer price of £240 plus 3 free games). I got 6 games in total which I sold on ebay for £60, bringing down my outlay to £420. Read my Amazon review of the Zotac 770GTX (great value for money and my SLI rig trounced my previous Palit 780Ti in performance and price). However, my intention was to use the 2x770GTX-SLI as a stop gap until prices of 780GTX come down. Alas, 5 months on and the cheapest 780GTX I could find was a good quality Zotac for £340 (again Novatech). I was going to go for it but then I saw a special offer on Amazon for the Sapphire TRIX R9-290 for £284. That is £56 cheaper than the cheapest 780GTX. So I went for it and bought two. Both 290's arrived next day but one turned out faulty (defective Hynix RAM). I RMA'd it for a replacement, which arrived three days later.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the 290's are of good build quality. But no-one has mentioned the underside, which should have a metal back plate. This one does not. However, upon close inspection, the metal plate is actually found internally (the pcb is attached to it, so it is giving internal rigidity and the hefty heatsink is attached to the other side of this internal metal plate).Read more ›

I received it yesterday. I have a triple screen set up, and managed to play the likes of Arkham City, BF4 and Far Cry 3 on Ultra. I have a few other titles to test, but haven't had time to do so yet.
I run 3DMark 11 on it, and the test was very informative. I got this to replace an HD7770, and it doesn't disappoint.
My only recommendations are first to make sure you have proper ventilation by the way of multiple fans in your rig, as at full load the card was running at 94 Celcius which I found worrying, even though it is supposed to run at 90 and it is normal since it's overclocked. The other recommendation is to check the size of the card at a PC parts store before buying. I had problems installing it as it is huge and I overlooked its sheer size, it barely fit on my case, but I was somewhat lucky. My PSU only has 500 watts, but it seems to be working fine for now.
I can't stress how important air circulation is, as it could overheat your motherboard or other components. I can feel how hot it gets on my legs when I sit next to the rig when playing demanding games. And the fans do run pretty loud, my set up is in my room, if it weren't for the weird fan noise and the heating I would probably give it 5 stars.
Another gripe, is how cheap these cards are for what they do. Price had come down, and I had to buy it. I was worried about April's news about the scrypt miners (similar to bitcoin mining, google) and their gold rush dreams coming to an end. Now these are people who bought dozens of R9 290 and 290X just for mining 24/7 at full load. So I need to make sure I wasn't get a second hand card, as it could be a potential RMA card or one with problems.
All in all, it is a good card, but it's too early for me to say more on this subject, might do an update further down the line...

runs at about 90' with fans at default (full load ofc) but after bumping the fan speed up from 20% (why??) to 60%, it now runs at 65' full load.
Powers BF4 at 5760x1080 with all settings on high, with fps of about 50. Doesn't need the active adapters that the old cards did to run multiple screens, so saved money there, also no screen tearing which is fantastic.
Would recommend, fantastic value for money especially if you're only powering one screen.
Will support Dx12 as well so future proof to some extent.
