Book Description

The gripping tale of sabotage at sea, from the acclaimed master of action and suspense.

In the heart of the Aegean Sea, a luxury yacht is on fire and sinking fast. Minutes later, a four-engined jet with a fire in its nose-cone crashes into the sea.

Is there a sinister connection between these two tragedies? And is it an accident that the Ariadne, a NATO spy ship, is the only vessel in the vicinity - the only witness?

Only Commander Talbot of the Ariadne can provide the answers as he uncovers a deadly plot involving drugs and terrorism - leading to the heart of the Pentagon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 21 Mar. 2013

Not up to his usual standards. A lot of dialogue and less action than you would expect from the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars An exciting read 14 Nov. 2013
By Nina
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having just returned from a cruise involving Santorini this made the book more immediate and brought back memories of the choppy seas and strong winds that are often experienced in the area. The characters are well-drawn and I especially liked Commander Talbot, the laid-back skipper, who was deceptively urbane. Though I am female I do find female characters in books intensely irritating so the three in this book, having minor parts, were bearable and served to move the story along. The aristocratic classicist, Lieutenant Denholm, is an understated genius with electronics - I do prefer self-effacing men to the gung-ho types: more depth! The story was wide ranging in its setting: from the White House to Athens to Santorini and somehow very credible. Having a naval father helped me to appreciate the difficulties at sea where care and patience and tidinesss are vital, so the painstaking plans of the recovery and safe disposal of the dangerous item were believable. A good read that has not really dated if you ignore modern developments in communication and electronics. I love a thriller!!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Poor Reflection 26 Oct. 2013
By Andrew
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Clearly waning this is a poor effort that lacks the detail and credibility of earlier work. A weak plot with weaker characters the story stretches credibility too far.

Avoid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of his best 28 Jun. 2014

Had lots of potential but did not live up to expectation. His earlier stuff is infinitely better. More like a play.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated but still a good read 5 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was written in the mid 1980's and was in fact the author's last published work before his death. Much has changed since then, politically, technologically and in terms of the tourist development of the island. Some of the dialogue also seems a little stilted and heavy by present day standards.
Why don't Amazon show the original publication dates, as well as that of the particular edition on offer?
