It's been a long time since a music recording has blown me away as this one has. Any fan of guitar music (classical, folk, rock, whatever) simply must listen to this record which is phenomenal both in terms of music and technique. It will either inspire you to get your own guitar out, or hang it up for good! William Carter gets added to my list of guitar heroes: Hendrix, Page, et al.

The most impressive thing about the album is that musically it stands up. No staid classical stylism here as one might think from its 'baroque' label - for music written some 300 years ago, some of it is incredibly comtemporary. Try and listen to track 9 "Cumbees' - largely strummed dance music of its day that sounds like something John Renbourn or Bert Jansch might have knocked out together in their blues heyday. These aren't the high-society dance styles that Bach might have written music in the style of, but the low-down knees-up of the common people. Brilliant foot-tapping stuff! Some of the tracks start as relatively simple baroque pieces that gather their own momentum before disappearing in a frantic finale of notes - try Track 4 (the second of the Passacalles): the last 30 seconds has so much going on it's hard to believe it's not overdubbed! I had not heard of Carter before this disc was recommended to me: I shall be seeking out his other recordings and trying to see him live as he seems a rare guitarist who can combine breathtaking pyrotechnics with absolute musicality. Anyone who loves the guitar must buy this disc. Beautifully recorded sound of the 5-course guitar as a bonus.

What a disc this is. My husband 'forced' me to listen this on a car jouney to my mother-in-laws. "As if things aren't bad enough" I was thinking as he said confidently "you'll love this"...

Well, much as it pains to admit that my husband is ever right, in this case he was and then some.

I had not realised the depth of sound and intricacies of melodic line that the guitar was capable of in the right hands. William Carter is obviously a master of the instrument and is blessed with a wonderful sense of timing and obviously has a passion for this music. I had not heard of Santiago de Murcia - had anyone? - but I must say he writes a good tune! His tunes sound folksy, exhilarating - dance-like really, and bear none of the constrains I would normally associate with baroque music.

I really enjoyed this album, and we were halfway through the third listen when the journey came to an end. It just kept getting better. Give this a try.
