Product Description

Product Description

Santiago Calatrava offers in his numerous buildings, engineering projects, sculptures and furniture designs, a cultural vision that unifies art, science and technology. This work presents the Spanish architect's oeuvre and ideas in the context of contemporary architecture and society. His demanding technical projects are shown to spark off highly abstract sculptural essays, which in turn serve as a research laboratory for the development of innovative engineering. After tracing the roots of Calatrava's design in Spanish traditions and 20th-century intellectual struggles, the author focuses on the development of major infrastructure projects and urban complexes where pragmatic efficiency and technical rationality are combined with engineering and aesthetics. The book discusses approximately 25 projects, including his most recent work, fully documented with photographs, drawings and sketches. Calatrava's work can be interpreted as a paradigm for contemporary design: this book shows that to achieve more integrated cities and landscapes, current boundaries between art, architecture and engineering must be blurred.

A must! 6 April 2009
Format:Paperback
You may not Calatrava's work, but this book is beautifuly written. A truly philosophical and ethic txt about how a true architect should think and apply that philosophy on his creative work (that is not the case in a mass production of ugly estate that rise like mushrooms everwhere in few years). Im a designer, interestend in architecture, and this book is a joy to read and the writings here can be used for any discipline from graphic design to music....

Portable Calatrava 22 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a good compact compilation of Calatrava's work with comfortable size to carry on, not the big and heavy ones that are being published that are impossible to carry or handle. Of course some recent projects are missing, and an up-to-date edition is welcome. The author Alexander Tzonis is a specialist in Santiago Calatrava's project.

beautiful representation of this great architect 12 May 2003
By Kaes Ali - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Santiago Calatrava; quite a magnificent architect, his work is inspirational, musical, walking through any of his works gives great joy, just like listening to good orchestrated music. This book contains a selection from his work, from bridges (for which he is famous), to monuments to many other examples. the text is concise, photos are nice, but the figures are small in most of the times, trying to keep a small size low cost volume. Needs an experienced eye to understand fully what the figures are. apart from that the book is great, the book's subject is even greater.

If you need a good reference on Calatrava's work 15 Jun 2006
By Humberto Mejia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Calatrava is indeed a new master architec and we should be glad to be alive in this era of his production.

For those of us who are not architects yet long to be in a plane of thought where we can share design insights with the great ones, Calatrvas offeres everything. Organic architecture, bold concrete and steel designs.

I would suggest to read also "Cat's paws & Catapults" to understand organic design (see my reviews).
