In addition to the original five long tracks of inspired pastoral prog, this 2007 version contains two different live performances of "For Nobody", from 1977'sTHE MISSING PIECE album.

Gentle Giant initially grew out of the band Simon Dupree and The Big Sound, which featured the three Shulman brothers Derek (Simon Dupree), Phil and Ray. The band had enjoyed a certain amount of success and is probably best known for the singles Kites and For Whom The Bell Tolls. Originally the band were a soul based R'n'B band although by the time of the hit singles the sound had become softer and more in keeping with the prevalent psychedelic trend which was popular at the time By late 1969 the music scene was changing and the Shulman brothers decided to embark on a new direction. Joining the Shulman's in Gentle Giant was multi instrumentalist Kerry Minnear, guitarist Gary Green and drummer Martin Smith. The band recorded three albums, which sold moderately well with the third album Three Friends being a concept album.
Gentle Giant however really hit their stride with their fourth album Octopus that was also a success in America in addition to England and mainland Europe. Like many bands Gentle Giant underwent changes in line up; the first change in line up coming just prior to the recording of the third album when Malcolm Mortimore replaced drummer Martin Smith.
Sadly Malcolm Mortimore was himself replaced following a motorcycle accident, which laid him up and necessitated another change in the line up when John Weathers in turn replaced him. This line up again seem settled until founder member Phil Shulman called it a day following the release of the album In A Glass House. The band however was still incredibly popular particularly in a live capacity and elected not to replace him.
The band eventually split in 1980 leaving behind an excellent recorded legacy. John Weathers continued to work with Welsh band Man whilst two of the Shulman brothers also remained in the music business with Ray producing and Derek went into A&R signing bands like Bon Jovi.
Santa Monica Freeway is the latest in a series of recordings on the Glasshouse label and was recorded in January 1975 at a concert in Santa Monica. The album also contains two bonus tracks For Nobody Part 1 and For Nobody Part 2 recorded at a sound check in Dallas in 1977.
This recording has been re mastered for release
