Vic Godard returns to his best with the first new album in, what, 10 years. Expect the unexpected as Vic (reviving the Subway Sect name) juggles beats and samples to reinvent himself yet again. Lyrically, he's by turns humorous, self-deprecating, spikey and whimsical (often in the same song). Highlights include an incendiary "Back In A Void" (has to be a single), "Heavy Heavy Load", "Lazy So and So" and "Americana on Fire". Vic has always resisted easy categorisation and Sansend (recorded at a studio in Sans End) doesn't help - there are smatterings of jungle, reggae and crooning underpinned by Vic's wayward vision. As Momus once sang: "Jesus Christ has hardly christened me/Son of the one in the directory/Between Vic and Jean-Luc Goddard". Somewhere between God and Goddard; yeah, I guess that's where you should file Vic.
