This is Barbara Erskine back to doing what she does best! I have only just bought and read this book, but I know that it will become a favourite. I am fascinated by her ability to twitch the curtain of time aside, and allow us a glimpse into past times. I
appreciated the wrapping up of 'Whispers in the Sand' as sometimes it is nice to know the eventual outcome. I really do find the whole concept of death and time being able to transpose with the present compelling reading. I also find it ultimately very sad. I am always moved by the stories of soldiers from the two world wars finding themselves crossing into the present time. I find it unbearably tragic. I think that this collection of stories and poetry are a must for anyone who likes to wonder about past and present lives, and how they can entwine. I have all Barbara Erskines' books, so I suppose I am biased when I say that she is a truly wonderful writer, who is able to convey deep meaning in her words. This is a book that I feel would be best appreciated when alone, on a dark night, with a huge mug of tea in front of a cosy fire. It worked for me!!

I had my doubts about purchasing this book in the first place, as it was a compilation of short stories, but in the end decided to go for it - based on BE's other successes. Unfortunately, I was right to be somewhat hesitant. Nearly each and every one of these stories centres around the same theme - namely, a house or cottage, a woman who's been cheated on and a broken heart - and a ghost! Ms Erskine is generally creative in her writing style, however it grieves me to say that with 'Sands of Time' this wasn't the case. The author relies on the same theme throughout in that one short story is pretty much the same as the next insofar as context and theme goes. Perhaps short stories aren't her forte?

Groundhog Days...... 15 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed the first couple of stories in this book, but then realised as I read further that it was basically the same theme over..and over...and over.
I had the feeling that the shorter stories may have been written(maybe for a womens' magazine) over a period of time, and not meant to be published as a collection.Apart from the two Egyptian stories, they all seem to include a wronged woman, a house or cottage in the country, a ghost - or even a wronged ghost - and usually a new man. Separately they are fine but together - too much.
