This classic World War II actioner has Wayne as a tough but compassionate Marine Corps sergeant, John M. Stryker. Tough name, too. Stryker's job is to turn a bunch of raw recruits into a fighting machine. His no-holds-barred approach causes a great amount of friction, not to mention a running subplot concerning his personal life that makes him something of an enigma to his men. The mystery of his past is not fully resolved until the very ending, by which point Stryker is decidedly a war hero. The supporting roles of those who hate Stryker's guts, and who are inevitably won over, are played handsomely by John Agar and Forrest Tucker. Veteran film director Allan Dwan helmed this one, and used real war footage and three of the surviving soldiers who raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi to reenact that momentous event. An engrossing and entertaining war flick all around, Sands of Iwo Jima boasts one of the Duke's finest, most measured and layered performances. --Jim Gay

Quite possibly the greatest war movie ever made. It charts the battle against the Japs on Iwo Jima. Big John gives one of his finest performances as the battle hardened, hard-hitting Sergeant Striker. It's his job to change a woosy group of soldier boys into real marines ready to fight.
His ways are hard and cruel bringing the men to dislike and even hate him. Especially Peter Conway (played by John Agar), who's father was a friend of Strikers. He has recently been married and is not in the war voluntarily.
His opinion of Striker changes when he saves his life from a grenade. The Duke's ways pay off when they are sent to fight on Iwo Jima.
With intense battle scenes, superb acting and real footage of the battle. This is a great achievement for the Duke and an epic, classic war movie that you have to have in your video collection.

Sgt John M. Stryker is a battle hardened Marine who's job it is is to prepare his new charges for the realities of war. With no care for making friends, Stryker does what ever it takes to make these men tough and ready for the Pacific conflicts to come.
Sands Of Iwo Jima is unashamedly proud in its jingoistic fervour, and rightly so. Iwo Jima, and the now immortal portrait of weary American soldiers hoisting the flag atop Mt. Suribachi, has become a bastion of bravery, a beacon of triumph if you will. So it's no surprise to find Allan Dwan's film has no intention if deviating from boasting its colours, and hooray to that. Here as Stryker we find John Wayne giving a bit more to his character portrayal than merely some beefcake winning the war. Wayne puts depth and sincerity into Stryker, an air of believability shines thru as he shows vulnerability, we believe he can win this war with his men, but we also see tenderness and it lifts Sands higher than your average war picture.
Wise old director Dwan {432 directing credits to his name}, weaves the picture together with admirable restraint. Fusing actual newsreel footage with his own tightly handled action sequences, Sands plays out as the tribute and rally call that it has every right to be, even finding place in the film for three of the soldiers who hoisted that now famous flag. Ira Hayes, Rene Gagnon and John Bradley are the three gentlemen to look out for. The rest of the cast don't really have too do much outside of respond to Wayne's two fold performance, but keep an eye out for a fresh faced Richard Jaeckel as Pfc. Frank Flynn, while i personally enjoyed the brief, but important contribution from Julie Bishop as Mary. Wayne received a nomination for Best Actor at the Academy Awards {too bad for him that 49 contained brilliant shows from the winner Broderick Crawford & Gregory Peck}, with other nominations going to the Best Story, Editing and Sound categories.
Lock and load and saddle up for a top entry in the WWII pantheon. 8/10

I mainly like John Wayne in westerns and favourites include 'The Shootist', 'Rio Bravo' and 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence'. Two of his war films are also in my favourites, 'In Harms way' and this film 'The Sands of Iwa Jima'. Theres no denieing the film is old now, but it certainly stands the test of time due to great performances and a combination of real war time footage edited into the film throughout as well as believable sets and landscapes. John Wayne plays his part especially tough as he trains his troops for combat. The film sits comfortably with another great war film that featured Wayne, 'The Longest day'.
