More About the Author

Jane Austen was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction set among the gentry have earned her a place as one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature.

Jane Austen was born in Steventon rectory on 16th December 1775. Her family later moved to Bath and then to Chawton in Hampshire. She wrote from a young age and Pride and Prejudice was begun when she was twenty-two years old. It was originally called First Impressions. It was initially rejected by the published she submitted it too and eventually published in 1813 after much revision.

About the Author

Jane Austen was born in 1775 in rural Hampshire, the daughter of an affluent village rector who encouraged her in her artistic pursuits. Jane remained in the vicinity of her childhood home for much of her life. As such it was through family and friends that she learned most of her considerable understanding of manners and relationships. In novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma she developed her subtle analysis of contemporary life through depictions of the middle-classes in small towns. Her sharp wit and incisive portraits of ordinary people have given her novels enduring popularity. She died in 1817.

This is a beautiful edition of the short, unfinished novels and juvenilia of Jane Austen, including numerous works I personally hadn't even heard of. Be aware though that this hardcover is quite tiny, half the size of a normal paperback, meaning that the print is quite small. I don't normally need my glasses for reading, but I did in this case!

The wealth of material presented here is impressive. 'Sanditon', of course, is well-known as a tragically unfinished masterpiece and one feels the pang of what might have been just too keenly. The quality and maturity of writing here is on a par with 'Persuasion' and 'Mansfield Park', with an added comedic emphasis that appears to be anticipating Dickens. 'Lady Susan' and 'The Watsons' are also well-known, but this volume offers an extraordinary range of earlier less-known material, such as 'Evelyn' and 'Catharine'. The former is fascinating for its bizarreness more than anything, a very surreal and subtly disconcerting tale about selfishness and morality. 'Catherine' on the other hand is in familiar territory as a comedy of manners, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments redolent of 'Pride and Prejudice'.

And there is more, much more. A great collection.

I particularly like the size of this series. Pocket/handbag size. You can easily hold them in one hand . Handbag size so you can get the book out and read it wherever you are and it is not heavy in your bag.
The paper is nice and the edges are gold which makes it feel even more sumptuous. I now have the whole set of Jane Austen titles and I am delighted with them. The paper cover is the only weak bit as it is not as classy or as sophisticated as the book itself, But underneath the paper jacket is a lively deep red canvas cover which is nice. Also a lovely red tie to use as a book mark.

If you go to certain bookshops in the real world, you either get people who have no idea about literature wondering who on earth classic novelists are, or ones who look at you as if you are practically illiterate if you don't know the full list of books written by a classic author. So, Amazon saves the day here and gives you a full range to scroll down to find gems like this. Lovely presentation too.
