Alan has given the clip+ a poor rating due to low volume. There is a fix for this for the Clip Zip so maybe the same fix applies to the clip+. The clip zip has a built-in volume limiter (a European directive) to avoid eardrum damage, if the player region setting is configured as Europe. At max volume this means it struggles to drive an external speaker.

To resolve:
You can change the region setting if you reprogram the firmware in your clip zip. There are clear and easy instructions on the Sandisk website [...]. If you run the updater 'Update using the Sansa Firmware Updater' and you have the latest firmware in your player, it won't give you the option to reprogram it. In this case follow 'Manual Firmware Update (Download and Instructions)'.

When the clip zip runs the new firmware it will ask you to set the region. Select 'Rest of world' rather than Europe and hey presto, you'll find that the max volume is much louder and should be ok with an external speaker. Tip: You may need to go into settings and set volume to 'High', and make sure the gain control setting is 'Off'.

This is a terrific little mp3 player with a big advantage over others that you can move the micro SD card, with perhaps your whole mp3 collection on it, from clip zip, to laptop, to phone, to TV, to media player etc. So if you don't want to add to the Apple profit mountain, the clip zip is the one for you.

.......and was really impressed. At the time (April 2011) there were not many alternatives on the market which offered 'clip' capabilities. I refused to buy an Apple and the comparable models were more expensive with less functionality. My little clip has been my constant companion. I am a student and I have books and music all loaded on to my device. I have purchased several memory cards which are loaded with my entire music/book library.
Although the casing is a tad plasticy looking, it has proved most robust..........until now. I have finally killed it. So I have no qualms in recommending this little bit of kit, and I will be ordering a replacement asap, I would however, recommend using more expensive ear phones.
It was in fact the comments of previous owners which enticed me to buy this model and I hope this review helps if you are considering buying an mp3.

Pros:
-It's tiny. I've owned bigger watches. It's light enough to dangle rather than fall if dropped.
-It's sturdy: I've dropped mine many times, sat on it etc. It's fine.
-Amazing battery life. I never bothered to count hours but I use mine for days.
-Dedicated volume control. I don't know about you but I like to be able to adjust the volume regardless of where in the menus I am.
-The clip really works. It's about a third of the total depth but it's strong and effective.
-The interface is customisable. With a custom third-party firmware such as Rockbox, you can literally change anything you don't like about the menus, or add utilities like an audible battery indicator or games like snake and blackjack.
-Mini-USB connection. No crazy proprietary connection meaning you can easily find spares of this by now very common cable.
-MicroSD slot. You don't need me to tell you how great that is, and it's well implemented. It's immediately accessible but I've not lost a card yet.
-It's so cheap. There's nothing like it for the price.
-No crazy software. It can be used like a normal flash drive, without your iTunes nonsense or similar mental stuff.

Cons:
-Screen has only 2 colours. That is blue with a yellow stripe at the top of the screen. This is completely fine for text but if you like your album art try the Clip Zip. The Clip+ does have a decent try though.
-If the clip snaps off, too bad. It can happen and it can't easily be fixed. But your Clip is now much thinner!

Clip+ vs. Clip Zip:
-If you want a full-colour screen, get the Clip Zip. Otherwise I'd recommend the Clip+ because the battery life is better and the player feels more sturdy.

I don't sleep well so I download talking books onto this little player. Takes lots of books and although might not have surround sound (what ever that is) does what it says on the tin. plus I can listen to radio 4 and any other program I wish. Small and easy to pack , easy to download onto so my music is there to if I want it.When I can't sleep my books help me drift off, easy to rewind which is inevitable.

I've had this mp3 player for a couple of months and found it great to use with a decent sound (providing you choose the North American setting during set up). The only downside is the battery life as I only seem to get around 12-16 hours whereas my old Creative Labs Stone player would last a few days but other than that in my humble opinion it's a good player.

I bought this player about 2 years ago based on a review that found it's output clear and clean as possible, it outperformed all majos brands including Apple products. And I must say that this was the best buy I have made, and the low price makes it even better. The 32GB microSD is also a must and it integrates perfectly so there is no need to buy a big internal memory to start with.

This player equipped with Rockbox firmware is the best player there is. Search google for rockbox to get this thing to rock.
