5.0 out of 5 stars Fit for purpose, 27 July 2008
For the benefit of those readers looking for a recommend but don't know what U3 is, it's a program which purportedly gives better portability to (some of) your programs and their associated files, and it also includes some basic games and puzzles, etc. If left on the pen-drive, every computer you plug it into then 'synchronises with the drive, so you can transfer your files, play the games, etc. This remains in the computer ready for next time, though you obviously need the pen to make it work...

I bought one of these because I do a lot of photography, using top end equipment, and have learned to trust the Sandisk memory cards. Others have failed, my Sandisk Extreme III cards just keep going, so I trust the manufacturer.

The U3 software can readily be removed from the pen drive at any time, but the better option if you don't want it, is to say no right at the start... it's not so evident to remove it from your computer once 'synchronised' and when you don't have admin rights (as at work). Most of us are inquisitive though, and therefore will want to have a look. I would suggest you either look it up on the internet or load it on a machine in which you have admin rights, and make your own decision. It's all too much of a gimmick for me, I can transfer all my office files and photographs without it and without problem. The U3 software is gone.

Once removed, it is as a normal and very reliable pen drive. Therefore; if you want a big drive, to transfer/back-up multiple files, and would pay a bit extra because you work or require it in a rugged environment, and couldn't care less if it maybe takes a few seconds longer to read or write very large files than implied in the description, then I highly recommend this drive to you. If however you want to fit a single file, which is at, close to, or exceeds 8 Giga-bytes, or maybe in this case a mathematical 'Giga' rather than the PC derived version, do as I do, use a DVD, or find a pen-drive which meets your needs. I still recommend Sandisk for reliability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top bit of kit, 8 Aug 2008

Lets dispel the myths - this can be used as pure storage and the portable application stuff can be removed by going to the website (link is on the drive).

If you do that though, you are missing a trick. The point of these U3 drives is that you can run a web browser, security, media and office software and much more from this drive without actually installing anything on the host PC. So many times in the past I've needed to edit a photo, open an office document or play a video and not been able to do so on the PC's in the place where I am, or even if your work machine is locked down this will let you use programs you wouldn't normally be able to install. Just having a web browser that has your favourites on and doesn't leave your information or history when you finish is very valuable to me. It is also nice to know that my data is secure via the password protection.

Don't just limit yourself to the U3 site either, the Portable Apps site has many free programs that are world renown.

In terms of the device itself, it is amazingly strong and looks very sexy. It is the third one I've had (the others still work, I just got bigger ones) but the first Ti one. If you want great capacity and something robust this is for you - U3 programs or not; if you are prone to leaving USB drives in machines then you should probably get a cheaper one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good capacity and decent speed. And U3/CruzerSync is cool., 19 July 2007
By Amit Ray (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have had the 4gb version of Cruzer Titanium for a few months now. Although I have not compared it with many other USB sticks, I feel the speed is quite acceptable.

I've seen a few people complaining about the U3 environment and particularly the CruzerSync software. It's been absolutely no problem for me so far. Maybe I was just lucky :-) When I set it up, it asked for the folders I want to keep sync'd (you can choose individual sub folders too). I have also opted to sync Outlook Tasks and Calendar. You can, if you prefer, sync your Inbox if you want, configure it not to launch the U3 software automatically (that's what I have done) and configure it to have data sync'd between more than one computer.

A single big file is created on the drive which has all the data (files, tasks etc). A password is required to sync. Using the U3/CruzerSync software you can also access the data on any other computer (a friend's maybe), which is cool. Again you'd be asked for your password to do this, so yr data is kept well secured.

I think the U3 software is quite a nice development. I'm very happy with the purchase. The drive itself is fine too, I like the no-cap-to-loose design.

Perfect, robust, fast and big. Only down side is the U3 program. But you can remove it if needs be. It just slows down access when you first plug it in.
