Though 'not quite Kipling' the tales are told with the flavour of the time that they were written and a far more understanding acceptance of the mores and cultures of the indigenous peoples of West Africa than I was expecting. The tales left me wanting to read more of them, always a good sign.

A free kindle book. one well worth reading, wrote in the days before political corectness gone mad so it is a proper story
Wallace is an excellent author and writes well. You can actually imagine being one of Sanders Askari s when he is dealing with the many and varied problems in the days of the empire in East Africa. The tradgety is that many years on nothing seems to have changed.

Sanders demonstrates good old-fashioned British values in west Africa. The 'natives' soon learn to respect the firm smack of firm government, all to the rhythms of jungle drums and the King James Version.
Kipling meets Conrad, then they go down the pub with Conan Doyle for some Saki. Unashamed, naïve, out-of-date, wonderful.
