SANDERS OF THE RIVER (1935) Set in 1930's Nigeria, Leslie Banks stars as Commissioner R.G. Sanders, a British colonial District Officer struggling to rule his province fairly. In his struggle against gun-runners and slavers, Sanders enlists the support of a native chieftain, Bosambo (ROBESON). Based on the story by Edgar Wallace. KING SOLOMON'S MINES (1937) When Irish dream chaser, Patrick O'Brien, vanishes while on the hunt for the fabled mines of Soloman, his daughter enlists the help of rugged adventurer, Allan Quartermain (HARDWICKE) and African guide, Umbopa (ROBESON) to find him. Along the way they battle rugged lands and hostile natives in this first adaptation of H. Rider Haggard's rip roaring adventure.

Excellent films. Sanders of the River shows the British Empire at its best. When you consider what the Belgians were doing in the Congo during the same period we British were angels.
My sons watched the B+W King Solomons Mines and expressed surprise as to how much they had enjoyed it.

Both films have excellent singing by Paul Robeson.
