Product Description

  • Ten literary, psychological, and suspense tales collected in Sandcastle and Other Stories are nothing short of an adventure through a roiling sea of emotion. An old man twisted by fate and a lost love . . . a young girl playing on the ocean shore becomes entangled in nets of a mercurial god . . . a divorced man mired in troubles, coerced into taking a singles cruise . . . a Hollywood actor in a television drama, always typecast as the bad boy . . . a child kept awake by night terrors, and a woman who hides her secretive personality from everyone on the beach one sunny day. Genuine voices of the characters, mixed with a clear-eyed tonal directness, make this a series with mesmerizing psychological interaction. Stories span a broad depth of human understanding and build a bridge between deepest chasms of pain and high portals of joy. Read Sandcastle and Other Stories and stand witness to unspeakable hate sitting with cozy wile, right beside unconditional love -- a provocative and compelling mirror on the human condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Read 9 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This enchanting short story collection deftly examines the psychology of life.
With elegant prose, each story leads the reader through a character's journey, requiring reflection on influential events in their lives, and finishes up with an unexpected twist at the end.
This anthology can be read as individual stories, or in its entirety, and I very much look forward to more work from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Debut Collection 8 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Justin Bog is a generous author who provides ten very distinct stories in his debut collection. His writing is raw and palpable, so hold on tight, you're going to need a breather in between each story.

The one that affected me most was "Under the Third Story Window." I reread it twice to appreciate the nuances of each character, their complexities, and how the story wove itself so seamlessly around them. It's a difficult story about people you wouldn't want in your neighborhood, and yet, there is a painful realization that they exist all around us - if only we'd pay attention.

Mr. Bog obviously pays attention, and it shows in his storytelling. His power is akin to a spider spinning a web for its victims. You know the outcome may not be pretty, and yet...you cannot help but be drawn in.

As a lover of the short story genre, I consider this to be a terrific first collection.
