Product Description

The debut album from new project by Sam Healy (North Atlantic Oscillation) During the last few years North Atlantic Oscillation have been steadily building both their fanbase and their reputation. Well known fans such as Zane Lowe and Guy Garvey have been joined by a growing number of devoted punters drawn to the band's unique combination of sonic complexity and melodic intrigue. The band's second album Fog Electric was released in 2012, following 2010's Grappling Hooks and numerous tours and festival appearances have accompanied both releases. Now Sam Healy, NAO's frontman and songwriter, returns with Sand, a new solo project which will be released on Kscope in October 2013. Written, performed and recorded throughout 2012 and 2013, Sand allowed Sam to work in a different way, as he describes: I wanted to try something that I could work on entirely alone, with no deadlines or schedules intruding on the process. It was an experiment to see if I could conceive and execute a whole record without any outside influence. I only told few people about it until it was almost complete. I had a sense after the release of 'Fog Electric' that I should try something else before starting on a third NAO album, something with a different feel, a musical palate-cleanser. This change in process has resulted in an album which, while still sure to appeal to fans of Healy's previous work, has a more intimate and personal feel, both sonically and thematically.

The reason I bought 'Sand' was because I really like North Atlantic Oscillation. I was fairly intrigued to hear what the solo work of NAO's singer would sound like. Perhaps not surprisingly, it's NAO-ish. The vocal sound is obviously going to be similar, but there's also the largely synth-heavy sound of the music. However, I think it has a slightly more commercial sound than NAO. enough for this solo album, to be able to stand as a distinct work and not be viewed as the third album the band didn't make.

Sand is a musical treat which improves with every listen. Undoubtedly this piece of work will not reach a wide audience which is a real musical crime. Hats off to the Kscope label for continuing to support these artists who are actually able to put together music that is experimental without being off the wall, and for allowing their artists the freedom to go where they want to within their craft.

Almost impossible to pigeon-hole (and why would you want to), but if you like neo-progressive synth-laden melodic music, then I don't think you'd be disappointed with Sand (or indeed NAO).

well where does one start?......for those not sure this is the solo album from the lead singer of "north atlantic oscillation"....i have only ever done one review on amazon and the only reason i am doing this is because it is that good......why?......well if you like something different, hard to label, like an amazing vocalist, into music that constantly shifts shape, gets better over further listens.....then this is for you......this truly is one of those albums that will bypass some peoples radars ( especially in this internet age of today) and for those that do catch on....it will be a worthy addition for anyones musical library......and the CD comes in great packaging.....i cant say what are the highlights are as it constantly changes one week to the next.....its that kind of album.......please.....give this a go....you wont be dissapointed.
