Biography

Born in Harlingen, Texas, smack in the middle of a family of five children, to an Air Force Major and a registered nurse, Beth grew up all over the place – a self-described “geographical mutt.” Her family finally settled in Alabama in 1969 when Beth was just going into the ninth grade, moving there from Munich, Germany. Crossing back over the ocean with her came her first guitar, a German made… Read more in Amazon's Beth Nielsen Chapman Store

When my son was diagnosed with cancer, I had to relive the agony of watching both my parents battle against the illness, a battle they did not win, but my son (perhaps) is. Listening to this album - and knowing what BNC has gone through, both with her late husband and her own battle against breast cancer - adds great poignancy to what is, already, a beautiful album.

Each word can be heard - she sings with clarity, passion and hope. The arrangements are sheer class and the whole album is put together beautifully. The guest singers, Michael MacDonald and Bonnie Raitt, are excellent and, if "The Color Of Roses" or "Sand And Water" don't make you shed a tear or two, I guaratee the final track "Say Goodnight" will do so. Leave the disc playing, as there is a lovely little bit of instrumental on it at the end.

It's a wonderful album - it's just a pity I took so long to get to know it and I'm even more embarrassed that I have not bought another of her albums. I hope to put that right soon.

A gem 5 Mar 2003

Like a lot of people i got to know Beth's work through a chance hearing of one of her songs on the radio {'Dance with me slow' from 'You hold the key'). After hearing the album i went on to discover more and purchased Sand and water. I was not disappointed this album held more resonance for me, it is filled with emotive lyrics and for those of us who have lost a loved one it has lyrics that can be identified with. 'Sand and water' and 'Say goodnight' are my favorite tracks for that reason, which is not to forget the more up tempo tracks which provide a bit of rocking relief such as 'hands up for the wrecking ball'and 'happy girl'I would strongly advise anyone who likes music that can touch them emotionally and make them think to buy this album.

I first bought BNC's 'Deeper Still' album (and have reviewed it on this site if you'd care to take a look). A lot of the other reviewers compared 'Sand and Water' with 'Deeper Still', so considering what a wonderful album that was, I just had to have this one. I had not heard any of the songs on this album before buying it, but thought it would be worth the risk. My faith was rewarded. Actually I do think 'Deeper Still' is marginally the better of the two, but that's just nitpicking. There sin't a dud song on this album, and some of them are just ....well, great. They are all the more moving when one considers the depths from which they have welled up. Most of them, the more contemplative ones at least, are a tribute to BNC's love for her late husband. The title track and 'No One Knows But You' could wrench tears from the hardest of hearts. But all is not gloom; the bouncy 'Happy Girl' is also performed with great conviction, and is one of my favourites, and there are other upbeat songs. The production is good, with the voice coming over very clearly; on some tracks you could imagine the singer to be in the room, performing just for you. Makes me want to catch a live performance next time BNC visits the UK. Definitely five stars.

A very easy to listen to singer but with some punchy numbers in there too. I bought this after hearing a song on the radio, and am pleased I did.
