5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Holdsworth genius 16 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
Again, it is surprising that this masterpiece had not been reviewed before. It is such an outstanding album with many tracks that appear in later album collections (Sand, Distance v. Desire, Pud Wud, (the wonderfully named) 4.15 Bradford Executive, and Mac Man) but remains a must have album.

Each track is refreshingly different and inventive.

This was one of my first Holdsworth albums and one which confirmed (as if one needed confirmation) that this was a creative and artistic genius at work.

This album particularly sets out Alan Holdsworth's stall as someone who can create music of great harmonic interest and inventiveness. As ever the guitar virtuosity never seems gratuitous and flows brilliantly through the various modulations.

Each track is excellent and unique.

Buy without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holdsworth at his creative pinnacle 15 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Ok - Allan's got a synth axe and has play on 'Atavachron'. He then masters it and does this album. Everything comes together so nicely. His unearthly voicings work so well on the Synth Axe and he picks great sounds on his synthesizers. This breaks the overall fusion sound that so many guitar-based bands fall into.

This is a very very good album. I've never tired of the clashing bell-like dissonances of the opening track, coupled with diatonic backing. Anyone interested in harmony will have a field day with this. 'Pud Wud' contains an insane solo and finally, 'Bradford Executive' is a vivid piece of modern guit' playing across a progression that doesn't repeat (apparently).

This is just such a colourful album. A bit like hearing music for the first time????

Holdsworth great - long live the king of barking mad harmony and legato frenzy guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sand 3 April 2010
By Chalky
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best modern Jazz/fusion recordings You'll hear in your life. Belted bang up to date by the notion that, although you can register the sound of them, there are no keyboards on the album, (apart from a solo in 'Pud Wud'), it's all guitars and guitar synths. Made all the more remarkable by the fact that this record was recorded in 1986:-So here's what to do; get a great EQ on it and listen to it today-in a totally digital domain...............Fantastic Allan Holdsworth recording.
