From the Back Cover

When investigative journalist Isabel Morgan vanishes, her colleagues and lovers see this as just another gambit in her ever-dramatic life. But her closest friend, Leo Holland, is filled with a sense of dread: something terrible has happened to Isabel. She is more certain of this than of much else in a life that is teetering close to the edge. In desperation, she flies from New York to trace the woman she realizes has become her sustaining force. But how well does anyone know their best friend?

Convinced that Isabel's analyst holds the key to her disappearance, Leo masquerades as a potential patient. In the process, however, she discovers more than she set out to know. Danger, it seems, in Isabel's secret world, comes in many guises.

I have just finished Lisa Appignanesi's 493-page novel in one sitting. The pages turned themselves and the story never failed to engage my attention (even though my interest in the technicalities of GM crops is virtually nil). The cast of characters is quite large, but this is not one of those novels where they are so ill-characterised that the reader begins to forget who they all are. Each is vividly characterised and memorable, with the possible exception of the arch-villain, who is perhaps something of a cardboard cutout. Settings - from New York to trendy East London lofts to the North Devon coast - are nicely and convincingly described. The novel hinges extensively on psychoanalytical technique, of which the author clearly has a firm grasp - it is no surprise to discover that she has also written a non-fiction work on Freud. Last, but for me anything but least, the writing style is faultless, with hardly a word or a comma out of place (it is probably small-minded to ask why nobody noticed that distances in England are measured in miles and not in kilometres, but I will anyway). Altogether a highly enjoyable read.

The story is interesting, especially her use of current modern concepts and problems like GM crops and greed to get a monopoly illegally etc. Her style in this book is rather clipped and threadbare; I would wish for something richer in descriptions of scenes, characters and events.

I loved this book when I first read it years ago, and then decided to re-read it.Its a good thriller, albeit not of the very dark kind, but the author brings depth to it. I thoroughly enjoyed it again. And - very important - it has a good ending!
