Sanctuary: British Artists and their Studios gives a rare and privileged insight to the studios and inspirations of nearly 120 of Britains greatest living artists working today, both in Britain and abroad. Sanctuarys stellar cast of artists encompasses many different ways of thinking about and making art. This lavish, large-format book brims with specially commissioned photographs portraits, images at work, places of inspiration and incisive interviews: the artists open their minds as much as their studio doors. The book is full of insights, revelations and thoughts on the modern art world and contemporary art practice, giving a vivid sense of what it means to be an artist at work today. Features a stellar cast of characters, including Frank Auerbach, Ron Arad, Fiona Banner, Peter Blake, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Martin Creed, Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George, Susan Hiller, Howard Hodgkin, Polly Morgan, Cornelia Parker, Grayson Perry, Paula Rego, Juergen Teller, Gavin Turk, Keith Tyson, Rachel Whiteread and more the list is extraordinary. Iwona Blazwick gives an A-Z of studios with a twist; Richard Corks Studio Visits gives a personal and vivid tour around the studios of Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Bridget Riley and more; Tom Mortons Field Notes on British Art in the Third Millennium is an intelligent sketch of the wider wilder world that all artists now inhabit.

Review

`Lavish, cleanly designed doorstep of a book ... the triumph is in the photography of Robin Friend' --RA Magazine

'Fascinating' --The Times

Big, ambitious ... [it has] a sumptuous physical presence ... Amirsadeghi both controls the potential sprawl of his inquiry and elicits answers which serve, however intermittently, to illuminate the authentic spirit and practice of art-making ... much of the pleasure Sanctuary gives is in allowing the outsider or neophyte access to a professionally informed and
conversationally pitched thinking-aloud. --The Times Literary Supplement

Engaging, intelligent and genuine ... a fascinating read. --Aesthetica

A voyeuristic glimpse into art's alchemical laboratory ... asks searching questions and gets plural, profound, provocative responses about the nature of art and its practices ... a thought-provoking, iconoclastic book. --The World of Interiors

A nosey-parker's key to the kingdom of the creative process itself, the artist's studio. --Monocle

Boldly ambitious ... interviews 120 British artists in a freewheeling way about their practice and process, inspiration and ideas ... the images are superb ... [Robin Friend] has captured the artists at work and at play as vividly as the spaces they inhabit. --The Spectator

Wholly absorbing, informative and even exciting ... an endlessly fascinating, beguiling and intriguing visual anthology; the work itself is usually presented obliquely, cleverly encouraging a desire on the part of the reader to see more of the art, as well as the artist and workplace --V&A Magazine

Each one of the sanctuaries, every one beautifully photographed by Robin Friend with portraits of the artists, is accompanied by illuminating interviews that immediately shed new light on their work ... Sanctuary feels like the first truly necessary compilation book of contemporary artists that I can remember. --The Daily Telegraph

Insights are plentiful and not a few preconceptions and prejudices are connected ... a worthy addition to the mass of contemporary documents that are destined to become important archives for researchers of the future. Thames & Hudson have a solid history of excellent, cutting-edge visual arts publishing, not least with their support of street art and graffiti, and this is no exception. A fascinating opportunity to peek behind the scenes into the private world of the art professional. --F22 Magazine

An intriguing glimpse into the artist's world. --The Observer

Lively interviews ... colourful reminiscences ... superb photography ... For anyone interested in British art, it is a gold mine. --Art Quarterly

Packed with beautiful photographs and gives rare access to the private worlds of these inspiring artists. --The Evening Standard

Robin Friend's frank and ungimmicky photographs offer a privileged insight into usually inaccessible creative spaces ... Sanctuary eschews romanticising to provide a quietly penetrating record of what Blazwick aptly describes as the sheer ordinariness and quiet discipline required for the daily act of making art. --The Art Newspaper

Not a coffee-table book, because it is clearly overwhelming, too interesting, thought-provoking, irritating, annoying and informative... and altogether too weighty for such a mundane purpose. ... splendidly revealing. --Cassone

Sanctuary photographs 120 Britain's leading artists in their workspace, discussing their daily practice and creative foibles in deliciously telling detail --The Sunday Telegraph

Not a coffee-table book, because it is clearly overwhelming, too interesting, thought-provoking, irritating, annoying and informative... and altogether too weighty for such a mundane
purpose. ... splendidly revealing. --Cassone

5.0 out of 5 stars Sanctuary Britains Artists and their Studios 16 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
Sanctuary Britains Artists and their Studios is one heavyweight of an art book. The book weighs in at nearly six hundred pages and covers a wide range of British artists from Auerbach to Emin. To mention every artist and good point about this book would take forever. It is very comprehensive, so will stay fresh for a long time as the reader endeavours to read each profile over sometime. Some lesser known artists are given two pages, whereas the more established or infamous artists such as Tracey Emin are allowed several double page spreads.

Of course before even opening the book you know there will be some reference to the studios of Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Although only recent they now feel like distant historical figures in the art game. Some of my favourite artist profiles in this book include Frank Auerbach, Maggi Hambling, Gary Hume, Marc Quinn, Ron Arad, Gavin Turk and Sarah Lucas. Funny enough Auerbach's studio isn't shown in the book, yet you will understand why when you read his profile. Artists can be quite secretive about their working methods and the studio. As an artist myself I understand that the studio space is precious.

The beauty of this book is that we get to read about the day to day routines of the artists, their working methods and current activities. What is a little shocking is the passing of time and the YBA's of the 90's. Many still feature in this book, although much older than when they were last in the public eye. Perhaps they are a symptom of the growing celebrity youth culture in the art world, yet artists just don't do Botox so much.

The book will suffer a little from the passing of time, hence what was up to date in 2011 may not be in a few years. Yet the book is still a time capsule of British art in 2011/2012.

Great photos and brilliant idea for a book.
Have only flicked through it so far but just simply love having it.
As an artist myself, with a studio that I am so often alone in, owning this book helps me remember ....I am not alone! ;-)

this is a beautiful book, really interesting to glean a small insight about the people behind the work. the only reason i haven't given this book 5* rating is that it's MASSIVE and heavy, which makes it difficult to read.

I treated myself to this packed to the brim brick of a book. It's inspiring and well written. You can pick it up time and time again since there are so many interviews given by the wide range of artists accompanied by great pictures of them, their work and the places they work. difficult to take to bed though, although i do, it's very big and heavy! would also make a great present for artists of people into art.
