Good for the money

When I was offered this free for review purposes, I snapped it up. For more than five years now I've been constantly using the SanDisk SDMX18-008G-E46K, and it's still giving great service and going strong. I was curious to see how this slightly cheaper version would compare to the (much!) older model.

Really, for the price, I can't fault this little unit. It's easy to use, the display is clear, and the sound quality is great. However, the build quality is definitely inferior - in comparison to my other version (which feels as firmly crafted and rock solid as a little tank), this one feels a bit cheap and plastic-y.

My only reason for deducting one star from the review is that the SanDisk SDMX18-008G-E46K is still selling on Amazon, and for not much more than this one. And if I suddenly found myself needing another MP3 player, that's the one I would choose rather than this.

Bottom line? There's really not much wrong with this, and it's good for the money - but do yourself a favour and check out the SanDisk SDMX18-008G-E46K before deciding.

Quick volume fix

Nice little unit, does what it says.For those having too low volume issue it is due to EU regulations and can be fixd via a quick factory settings reset, see link below

Stupid OS

This is good but no where near as good as the previous models. The main reason is OS it has been so badly done. The old versions you just went to music and regardless if it was on the device or on the sd card it put them all in one place. This one however you have to go to card and then searxhr through to find what you want. Play all? No! Play all artists albums? No! They seem to have replaced the play all option with shuffle. If i wanted to shuffle it i would choose it from the settings. Which you can still do so seems pointless. So to round off. Similar to the older versions but terrible interface where the old version had it spot on. Why did they change it?..............

In the box you get a small piece of paper as a quick start guide, USB cable, headphones and the unit. You don't need the quick start guide as it's self-explanatory with the possible exception of finding how to turn it on - it's the middle button but is not marked with anything.

Plugged in and synced with Media Player. It's 8Gb but there are various files on it already so Media Player stated 7.7Gb free. I filled up leaving about 5Mb. Transfer took a while as it is a USB 2.0 device but went without hitch. Unfortunately when I disconnected and switched it on, a message appeared which stated it needs 20Mb free space and then switched itself off. I little irritating so plugged back in and removed some files.

I was quite impressed with the sound quality, much better than the older Clip version and can handle bass better. There is an equalizer for you to fiddle with the settings and with decent headphones you can get a good sound. Clearly this is the cheaper end of the market so don't expect miracles.

Menu system is largely easy to use. It has a return button which actually acts as a home button so sometimes you use that thinking you are going back a step but finding yourself digging through the menus again.

The radio works well, seems to receive a good signal and easy to switch between the two.

The device has an 18 hour battery life, I haven't tested this properly but it has been going a few hours without a problem.

I recently had the older version of this which had issues with it's switches - first the volume control went and the replacement the on/off button went. I have no idea if they have changed the insides so for the benefit of the doubt I'll assume they have fixed this issue.

Relatively cheap, good sound, easy to use. As long as they have improved the electronics then I can recommend this.

Priced at £28.99 as at the 14th June 2015, I think that this is a really nice piece of equipment and would be ideal for a teenager; particularly one like mine who has a habit of losing similar sized pieces of equipment, albeit more expensive such as his ipod nano (enough said). This item whilst holding only 8Gb within its internal memory can accommodate a micro SD card and therefore can be expanded to accommodate more tracks if 2000 is not enough. The player is really nice and small and would be ideal for someone who wants to use it for running or an outdoor activity, not just for those who sit at home or wander around in a daze.

Setup is simple rendering the poor instructions unnecessary and I have transferred tracks from both media player on a PC and our imac, both with ease, as well as transferring across tracks downloaded from Amazon; transfers are quick and so far I have not failed once in transferring music over. Sound quality is ok with the supplied earphones, but I have to say the quality of output increased significantly when I inserted a set of Sony Deep Bass Earphones (around £12.00), but those supplied are adequate remembering the total outlay price.

My son has used it now for a week and has not had to re-charge it and therefore I think that the 18 hours claimed might be achievable. He certainly wore it for much of yesterday and was pleased that it remains charged and I think that he was using it this morning for a couple of hours, but I was not strong enough to enter his bedroom to see! Whilst he has enjoyed the player, I did give it a good trial myself and listened to a number of podcasts as well as the radio, which I thought was OK; spoiled now with DAB and moving around meant that the reception was not as good as it might have been.Read more ›
