Digitally Preserve Videos and Photos

Many of today's storage solutions do not assure the long-term integrity of your photos and videos. Hard drives have moving parts, CDs and DVDs may be scratched and photos fade over time. That's why SanDisk created the SanDisk Memory Vault, the first product from SanDisk engineered to preserve your most important photos, videos, documents, and scanned files for generations* to come.

This device makes it easy to create, organize, and preserve your own memory log with photos and videos. It features no moving parts and is compact for easy storage in a drawer, closet, or laptop bag. The Memory Vault also comes in a 16GB capacity for users who want to store more files.

USB Connection for Easy Operation

It's simple to turn your disorganised photo and video files into an archive of your treasured memories for generations to come. The Memory Vault connects directly to your PC via the included USB cable for quick and easy data transfer and saving. Once digitally stored inside the vault, your photos and videos are essentially locked in and protected, yet still easily accessible.

Product and Warranty Information

Memory Vault is compatible with most systems, including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Mac OS X 10.4 or above. Memory Vault is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.**

3.0 out of 5 stars It's solid I'll give it that 24 Mar 2012

First off I love this idea. A storage device that you can put your precious memories on and store away safe in the knowledge that its robust construction should keep them safe. It also has limiters built in to stop you writing/rewriting to often that could degrade the memory. And it does feel good quality with a funky red light.

However, lets think about this logically.

Firstly, 8gb? Are we still in 1991? My families digital photo's alone far exceed this. But then maybe I have to select just weddings etc, the most precious memories as it were. As for any HD video's, well we can forget that.

In 100 years time, how will we access it? USB legacy support. I don't think so. So long before that ever happens we will most likely have to transfer the contents to a newer storgae medium.

There is no inbuilt encryption or data protection software. The included pouch is at best flimsy.

In summary, it is too little capacity for too high a price in a form factor that isnt designed to survive physical extremes. I would suggest a Corsair survivor drive would be equally as good. Write your stuff to it once and stick it safe and you have just as much chance as seeing it in 100 years! In fact you can get 32gb for the same price. A nice try from Sandisk but misses the mark by some.

Many years ago I was lucky enough to go to Comdex in Las Vegas. One of the sessions I attended was entitled something along the lines of "Preserving Our Memories in the Digital Age".

This session stood out to me as it was the first time I had heard anyone speak about long term storage and access to personal rather than corporate digital data. They spoke about things like how long would various file types be accessible for, what medium of storage would become the standard for long term storage (this was in the days before USB Memory Stick type devices) They spoke about changing standards and proprietary storage devices (such as the short lived Zip Drive). And they spoke about the fact that whatever we do, in a hundred years time it will still look like something out of the Ark.

It was also at about this time that I bought my first digital camera. One thing the Comdex session really drummed into me was the importance of always keeping a backup copy of your pictures. Despite trying very hard to do this, I know that over the last fifteen years I have still lost some pictures forever because of hardware failures.

Anyway - On to this particular product.

This product is marketed specifically as a long term solution to storing your memories for future generations. The idea behind this is really important. I am sure that everyone has a box of old family photos. I know I do, and some of them go back over 100 years. As almost all of our photography now never ends up in printed form (and if it does it is probably printed with inks that will fade over time), what will we leave behind for our future generations to find?

SanDisk hope that what we will leave behind will be this device.

2.0 out of 5 stars 'Memory Vault' 25 Mar 2012
By Max Rebo TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

Boy, SanDisk have got a lot to answer for. What we have here is a USB powered SSD drive that, for the sake of propaganda, has been branded as an all-singing, all dancing 'vault' that is perfect for storing 'treasured' files, such as your photographs and other kinds of media.

Give me a break. For the sake of paying almost four times what you would for other 8GB USB drives, this is the biggest load of nonsense I could wish to see in the field of flash memory. Sure enough, the product is robust and constructed with a nice two-piece metal enclosure, but this does not warrant the ridiculous price tag. To make matters worse, the drive uses a proprietary USB cable, which for the purposes of archiving is downright stupid. If you lose the cable that came with this product, the drive is useless.

Even the read/write speeds are nothing special and, from my tests, arrive just below average USB 2.0 speeds.

If you're going to archive your media then you'd be better off spending a similar amount of money for an external hard drive. Sure, the moving parts won't warrant it the same ruggedness as this particular product, but if kept in safe conditions and not treated like a childs toy, you have a drive with a far larger capacity and compatibility with an USB cable.

Sorry SanDisk - I'll stick to your SD cards for now.
