Product Description

It was the summer of 2014, and the true horrors of the Rising were only just beginning to reveal themselves. Fans from all over the world gathered in San Diego, California for the annual comic book and media convention, planning to forget about the troubling rumors of new diseases and walking dead by immersing themselves in a familiar environment. Over the course of five grueling days and nights, it became clear that the news was very close to home . . . and that most of the people who picked up their badges would never make it out alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story continues... 25 July 2012

In a short story told as part of an interview by Mahir, we see more of what we always wanted in the untold story of The Rising. I read this after reading all others in the Newsflesh series. You can probably read it at any point though and it'll still read like a brilliant story - perhaps this and the other short (Countdown) make an ideal introduction to the main trilogy, but for me they simply make it better giving us something to flesh out the beginning of the story.

Chronologically, they read as follows:

San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats
Deadline: The Newsflesh Trilogy: Book 2
Blackout: The Newsflesh Trilogy: Book 3

Read the first two at the start, or read them after the trilogy, but whatever you decide - you should read them all. This has been an excellent series that for now at least, appears to have ended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story 29 Sep 2012

I'd already the other three books in this series and knew the characters well. It was fascinating to read the story of how it all began after having this period of time only alluded to in the other stories. Also lent it to my 21 year old daughter who found it equally fascinating. Who ever thought I'd have actually felt compassion for zombies! This book illustrates how they feel once they know they're infected but can't do anything about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant prelude to the NewsFlesh Series 13 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading and thoroughly enjoying the Newsflesh Series, I was pleased to discover this novella, along with "Countdown", added to the Newsflesh universe, acting as preludes and satisfying my curiosity about the Rising itself. That said, it doesn't matter when you read this, before or after, it stands alone as a well written and gripping story.
One of the strengths of the Newsflesh Series is the believably created scenario of a post zombie apocalypse world and characters you can care about. San Diego 2014 builds on this and I can't speak highly enough of the pathos generated for the characters throughout. It's well written enough to generate genuine tension as you read. It's not a huge read, but it grabs you immediately and stays with you afterwards. A thoroughly enjoyable tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars zombies at comic con 6 Sep 2013

another novella based on the newsflesh world. a fun romp set just after the virus has been unleashed and people do not yet take seriously the perils of too many people in a confined room together. the story was good but only 3 stars just because it wasn't to do, or connected with any established characters (apart from briefly at start and end) which made it feel not as much a part of the series as the rest. still good though

5.0 out of 5 stars How it all started 23 Jun 2013

I read this after reading the trilogy that begins with Feed. A heartbreaking look into one of the places the Rising began which feels very true to life even as the events are (one hopes) completely fictional.

5.0 out of 5 stars uncomfortably good
Knowing at the start that only one gets out is uncomfortable, particuarly as you can't help but care about the characters that Mira portrays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mira Grant does it again
I have yet to read any of Mira Grant 's tales of the zombie apocalypse and it's aftermath with dry eyes by the end. She's an outstanding writer. Read her stories.
