After the infamous San Andreas Fault finally gives, triggering a magnitude 9 earthquake in California, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Johnson) and his estranged wife make their way together from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning, and when they think the worst may be over...it's just getting started.

Helicopter pilot, Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson), is a busy man working with the Air Rescue team of the Los Angeles Fire Department. It's not enough that there's a woman trapped in a car that's wedged halfway down a mountainside, but he also has to cope with local earthquakes which threaten California along the San Andreas fault. As he told a reporter, he's just doing his job, going where he's told, but he goes beyond the call of duty when his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) finds herself in trouble, not to mention his grown-up daughter (Alexandra Daddario). Meanwhile, back at the California Institute of Technology, seismologist Lawrence Hayes (Paul Giamatti) and his team are under pressure second-guessing the activity of tectonic plates and trying to figure out what's going to happen next as record-breaking earthquakes hit California.
San Andreas (2015) is a spectular movie so far as visual effects go and if you like nothing else you have to admire the people who created the effects that were astonishingly realistic and, if you think about it, rather worrying. You might think a disaster movie involving severe earthquakes along the Californian coastline would be a little too unsettling for Californians but they've been ignoring the threat for years despite the history of earthquakes in the region.
What threatens to be the biggest disaster of San Andreas is the script from time to time, and some of the events which were really stretching belief to snapping point. Still, what fun would it be if everything on a movie were possible? I think the woman in trouble at the very beginning must have been superhuman and she was not alone at being seeming immortal. I had to laugh at the helicopter hovering over the car lodged on the mountainside.Read more ›

This was just about a pass for me. No thought required for this bog standard disaster movie. Dwayne Johnson struts around saving people as the '150 year overdue' massive earthquake finally hits California. And that's it really. Chuck in the now obligatory, 'track down the errant son/daughter' storyline, and a very lame script, there's nothing to differentiate this from the usual disaster themed movies. Everyone who you expect to live, lives. And everyone else dies. The cg work was pretty hit and miss, ranging from extremely impressive, to downright cartoony. That pass I mentioned, was down to two reasons if I'm being honest. Alexandra Daddario, who plays Johnson's daughter Blake, is ridiculously likeable (and has THE most incredible eyes). Then there is Carla Gugino. She plays Johnson's 'soon to be ex-wife', and was a great addition to the cast. I've been a big fan of hers ever since she played the formidable Amanda Daniels in Entourage. So there you have it. Two very attractive leading ladies are pretty much the only reason to see this. Probably not a good enough reason to shell out £10...

Ray (Not the Rock, call me D-Wayne Johnson) is ex-military working for LA Fire and Rescue. In the opening scene, God rightly attempts to kill the world's most distracted driver, and Ray foils the plan with a helicopter that has its own swagger music. In a subplot that never connects, Paul Giamatti plays Professor Hayes at Cal Tech who predicts the big one, i.e what happens in Vegas, happens in LA.
The basic plot is the same as an Asylum disaster movie plot. A great disaster happens, and the film concentrates on one typical 2.3 child family trying to come together. In this case substitute a new male friend and his brother for 1.3 kids. The main difference is that Ray is separated from his wife (Carla Gugino) who is going to live with her new boyfriend Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd) and his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario). Yes I had "Taken" plot flashbacks and wondered if they were going to include Albanians. Liam Neeson would have stopped the looters.
As far as the plot, I really don't have to say anything more. Unless you are younger than the film rating, you will have the whole thing figured out in the first 10 minutes. Even the action within the scenes are predictable, like the Hoover dam scene hand off.
The soundtrack was typical. What separated this from an Asylum flick was the special effects, actors, and lack of insignia gaffs.
If you want on overly predictable action/disaster film, this is it.
Guide: 1-2 F-bombs. No sex or nudity.

Dwayne Johnson manages to find his family amongst the chaos whilst avoiding all sorts of peril.
Yes the effects are good, but with so much CGI on show the film looks like a cartoon.
At least with the resurgence of disaster films in the nineties such as Twister, Volcanoe and Dantes peak there was a mixture of practical effects and stunts to add realism.
Still the films at the least entertaining if you can get past the fact it has no emotion, cardboard charachters and a wasted use it f a mostly good cast.

This was a solid disaster film which could have been better but at least it has a solid rock as always a great female young lead and nice sub plots combined with great destruction scenes delievers what's promises. the film is no near to epic disaster films like 2012 and the day after tomorrow but is way above average films of this sub genre like AVALANCE, CATEGORY 6 AND 7 and a lot of other disaster average video flicks. if u are a fan of this action // adventure sub genre then this disaster film is a must have for you to see in a theater.
