Product Description

Product Description
Samurai tells the fascinating story of the courageous fighting men of early Japan, showing how they developed from the primitive fighters of the seventh century into an invincible military caste with a fearsome reputation. It describes their place in history as they became a noble army frequently used in power struggles between the Emperors and military leaders (shoguns). There are detailed sections on their weapons and armour, including samurai swords. The book takes you to the heart of the battle, with descriptions of tactics that convey the sights and sounds of combat. It contains four see-through 'vellum' sections that build up to show the layers that constituted the samurai's impressive armour. Samurai gives a real insight into Japanese history and is a complete guide to these historic warriors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 15 Jun 2004
By A Customer
This is an excellent book about the samurai, written by an expert on the subject and would make an ideal introductory purchase for anyone who wants to know more about the world of these feudal Japanese warriors.

The book is filled with information on everything about the samurai. The first few chapters concentrate on their role in Japanese history, showing how they rose to become the dominant class in feudal Japan.
These chapters also look at the wars of the period, such as the Onin War and the Sengoku Jidai, as well as their culture, their weapons, armour, tactics and military training.
A lot of information is covered, and the sections on samurai culture is particularly enlightening. They cover everything from the Tea Ceremony and Hara-kiri, through to the Noh theater, food and dining and Zen Buddhism.
The book is filled with many well selected pictures and photographs, while the see-through sections on the armour and costumes of the samurai are a great new touch.

This is recommended for anyone who wants to know more about the samurai, but who have only began looking at their culture (like me). Experts on the subject will probably not see anything new, but it's still a must-have book.
