I first read this book when I was 16 years old, and it made such an impression on me that I never forgot it.

Twenty-five years later I found it in my parent's loft. When I re-read it, I wasn't disapointed. Despite having read many similar books over the years, I still thought that 'Samurai' was the best book on aerial combat that I had ever read. The very well written accounts of his many dog-fights made feel like I was there with him. The graffic narrative is breathtaking.

The personal day to day accounts of living on air-strips in awful places gives a good insight into his life. He also describes the wider aspects of the war.

like the last reviewer, i must have been 15-16 when i first read this. was i hooked or what!!! twenty five years later, i got my hands on it again, and i gave me the same pleasure as when i first read it. this book is unputdownable. extremely very written, fast paced, touching and thrilling. the lae wing exploits, sakai's brutal training, his first kill, the cleanup trio's aerobatic demo over the aussies, the badly wounded sakai's epic flight nursing his shattered zero home...the stuff legends are made of.

if i were to choose a desert island book, this would be it.
