Book Description

10 May 2012
The ministry of Samuel Howells and the Bible College of Wales (BCW) have touched the lives of countless numbers of people all over the world. The author invites us on a lifelong journey with Samuel, to unveil his ministry at the College, life of prayer and the support he received from numerous staff, students and visitors, as the history of BCW unfolds alongside the Vision to reach Every Creature with the Gospel. The paperback and hardback editions also includes more than 110 black and white photos, which are interspersed throughout the book.

In 1950, Samuel became Director of BCW when his father Rees Howells was taken into glory and he led the work for the next fifty-two years; living a life of faith and intercession. Samuel lived through a time of tumultuous change in the world, and oversaw the work of the Bible College and Emmanuel Grammar School as it sailed through six challenging decades. Filled with 113 Black and white photographs, with many from the time of Rees Howells, this biography remains as a historical record of the life of a great man of God, Samuel Howells, the Director of BCW, its four estates, school, and its worldwide ministry.

Richard Maton worked under Samuel's ministry for forty-seven years and provides us with a firsthand account of Samuel's life and the inner workings of BCW, with its staff and friends. Richard was converted under the preaching of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones and was called to the College in 1956 after hearing Leonard Ravenhill preaching at BCW. He has served in various roles as teacher, lecturer, dean, trustee and Principal of the College and worked closely alongside Samuel for more than twenty years. Richard is married to Kristine who joined the College family in 1936 and provides valuable insights and additions to this story. Together they spent more than 120 years at BCW!

Anyone who has read and was moved by Norman Grubb's book, "Rees Howells, Intercessor", is going to be strongly desirous of obtaining this title, which serves as pretty much a sequel to that first, utterly absorbing account. "Rees Howells Intercessor" (to this day one of Lutterworth Press's best-selling books) had a huge impact on my life, to the extent that I've gone back and read it numerous times. I've read literally hundreds of Christian biographies - I find them more inspiring than most sermons or doctrinal books - but I had NEVER come across anything like the story of Rees. The level of intercession he achieved was just truly astounding.

"Samuel, Son and Successor of Rees Howells" takes up the story from the death of his father, and carries it right through to Samuel's death in 2004 (although, thankfully, many teachings and incidents in Rees's own life are also recounted here). What stands out prominently is that the thread of intercession which runs through the predecessor also runs right through this book - which serves as a full, comprehensive biography of the man, running at 350 pages. It's a beautiful book, with reasonably short chapters each with its own mini-theme - just as in the case of "RH-I". The many black and white photos that litter the book are also helpful and full of interest.

Certainly Samuel Howells had a very different personality to his father - he was quiet and extremely shy. But he carried the same mantle that his father carried - insisting that the main purpose of his own life, and that of the Bible College of Wales which his father had established, was to be one of heart-felt intercession.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Deeply Moving Biography of Two Amazing Men 19 Feb 2013
By MaryBea
This book tells the stories of two amazing men of God: Rees Howells and, his son, Samuel. The perspective is one of a personal, even intimate nature. Richard and Kristine Maton knew both of the Howells' from many years of working closely with them and serving as part of the 'College Family'. Mr. Maton was especially close friends with Mr. Samuel. His account of the men and the deep drive that kept them on the cutting edge of historic world events for 50+ years is powerful, edifying, encouraging, and very interesting to read. The intercessions themselves are beautifully recounted in Mr. Maton's 2nd book, 'Samuel Rees Howells: A Life of Intercession'. This book weaves the stories of the father and son and their responses to the call of God on their lives which played out, and still plays out, on a global stage. I especially loved looking at all the old pictures and copies of old documents.
This book would be a treasure trove to history buffs, Welsh natives, and anyone who is interested in intercessory prayer or world missions.

This book is not only a fascinating account of the life of Samuel Rees Howells, it is also very challenging in the way that it portrays a man who was totally committed. 5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiration to Intercessory prayer 9 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Biography of a Christian leader uniquely humble yet powerful for the benefit of others through intercessory prayer.
His Holy Spirit led prayers about local and global matters are traced over lengthy periods until desired results are achieved through God's grace and power. Such are achieved purely through his faith in God of the Christan bible. Mr Samuel's example have been an inspiration to both staff and students at the Bible College of Wales over a fifty year period. They joined in these intercessory prayers which, with no appeals, resulted in funding being received for the College and assistance to struggling Christian workers around the world. I will continue to recommend this book as a source of great encouragement to Christian friends.
