Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD

The Smart Choice for Ultra-thin Laptops

The Samsung 840 EVO is thin and light and is specifically designed for ultra-thin laptops. Plus, 840 EVO mSATA delivers fast performance with Samsung’s 2nd generation3-bit MLC technology and reliability with self-monitoring features. In addition to these features, your PC will stay connected longer, consume less energy and power back up from the sleep mode instantly.

TurboWrite
Boost your write speed with Samsung TurboWrite technology.
Switch to a higher gear
Magician software gives you the option of RAPID mode.
Always be in High Acceleration

Thanks to Samsung TurboWrite technology, Samsung SSD 840 EVO can deliver much faster sequential write speeds compared to the previous model -- up to tripling the speed from 130 to 410MB/s in 120 GB drives, and doubling it from 250 to 520MB/s in 250 GB drives.

Fast Performance

Samsung’s 3-bit MLC NAND flash memory stores data efficiently, increasing both speed and reliability. Whether it’s a heavy workload like video file editing or a simple task like a virus scan, 840 EVO mSATA runs every job smoothly and quickly. Multitasking is a simple job for this SSD, which can operate several tasks simultaneously.

Also, with Samsung’s TurboWrite technology, 840 EVO mSATA dramatically boosts the sequential write rate. The drive’s random read rate for light workloads (QD1) is 10,000 Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS). To improve system-level performance, turn on the RAPID mode on Samsung Magician software to use the PC’s free DRAM as a cache.

Keep your data safe
Self Encrypting Drive (SED) security technology helps keep your data safe.
Dynamic Thermal Guard protection
Dynamic Thermal Guard protection monitors the temperature of your SSD.
Consistent Reliability

Shocks, vibrations, high temperatures -- bring it on. Equipped with Advanced Signal Processing, Samsung SSD 840 EVO automatically corrects errors so you'll worry less about your data's stability. Plus, using Samsung Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART), you can track your SSD's health status. SMART warns you of any unforeseen errors before they occur, so you'll be prepared.

Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard protection monitors the temperature of the SSD, preventing it from overheating. When the SSD is exposed to extreme temperatures, the algorithm controls the SSD's power supply to keep it cool. Plus, with Samsung SSD 840 EVO your PC becomes lighter, meaning you can carry it around with you.

Protect Your Data with a Secure Encryption Engine

The 840 EVO mSATA’s Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) security technology helps keep your data safe at all times. The drive includes an AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption engine to ensure that your personal files remain secure -- even if you lose your laptop.

Stay connected for longer
Device Sleep (DEVSLP) allows you to stay connected for longer.
Stay Connected for Longer

When you're on the move with your PC, the last thing you want to have happen is to run out of power. With Samsung 840 EVO mSATA installed, you can stay connected longer and power up faster thanks to Device Sleep (DEVSLP). Your PC no longer needs to go into standby mode to conserve battery life, nor do you have to wait for it to power back on. Take full advantage of your AOAC (always on always connected) professional life, while enjoying a longer battery life.

Switch to a High Gear for Rapid Performance

Like changing gears in a car, with Magician software you have the option of RAPID mode, enhancing performance by processing data on a system level through the use of free PC memory (DRAM) as a cache. Depending on your PC memory, you can expect high performance and more efficient command processing, which improves with repeated tasking.

Keep Your PC Performance Safe from Heat

When you’re immersed in your work, you might not notice that your PC is burning hot and struggling to keep up. With 840 EVO mSATA, your PC stays cool, even when you sometimes overwork it. 840 EVO mSATA includes Dynamic Thermal Guard protection, which monitors and maintains optimal operating temperatures for the drive. The throttling feature can drop the SSD’s temperature when necessary to protect your data and ensure the responsiveness you expect.

I bought my laptop almost two years ago. It wasn't cheap, mostly thanks to the graphics card, and I decided I'm going to cheap out on the SSD version in order to save the additional 200 quid. I figured I would upgrade it with an SSD sometime in the future, but frankly, I had never considered it to be a necessity so I waited almost two years for the upgrade. What a fool I was.
Everybody said these things are fast, but I never realized they would completely change the way I do computing. I mean, I have been working (and playing) on computers for two decades now, and I got used to how they work. I had disliked laptops, mainly because most of them have tons of hardware from different manufacturers, all of which requires their own drivers, or worse, their own manager apps. Each of these apps have running background processes, slowing down your computer considerably. Especially the booting. Hard-drives simply cannot cope with that. I got used to this.
I have a fairly well-maintained system, still, a proper booting took almost two minutes, thanks to these damn drivers, managers and not to mention the anti-virus, Google Drive and all other goodies.
So I installed one of these babies and guess what. I press the power button and I have a ready-to-go system in 8 (EIGHT!!!) seconds. And that's taking me, entering my password, into account as well. Holy crap. If that's not enough, everything else is super fast too: browsing, video or audio playback, opening-closing programs. It's like the whole system is on steroids.
Samsung also has a very nice manager program (Samsung Magician) that you can download which, configured correctly, increases the performance of this beast further.

After spending a month with my new Dell XPS 15 and the 1TB 5,400 rpm `normal' hard drive that came as standard I needed more storage and decided that I'd also like some more performance which prompted me to start looking for an SSD.

After doing a lot of research online it seemed that the Samsung 840 EVO came out top on pretty much every speed test I could find and it was available with 1TB of storage...that made my mind up, this was the drive I wanted.

mSATA is something that was completely new to me, I've installed many a 2.5 inch hard drive but never ventured into the world of mSATA until now. My reason for choosing the mSATA version of this drive over the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB 2.5-inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive is that I wanted to be able to expand my total storage to 2TB, so I bought this mSATA drive to sit alongside the existing 1TB SATA drive.

When my mSATA drive arrived and I opened it up I simply amazed at how small the drive is; it's about the size of 2 SD cards next to each other! Installation was very simple, it just simply clips into the mSATA slot and then you're good to go.

After fresh installing the operating system on this drive I was amazed at the difference it had made. My laptop now boots to the Windows 8.1 desktop in around 6 seconds and everything is just so much quicker than it was previously.

To summarise, this is certainly not a budget drive and it might be difficult to justify the premium price tag, but all I can say is that I'm certainly very happy that I made the decision to buy this SSD...it has completely transformed what was already a very fast laptop. Would highly recommend.

When it comes through the letterbox you think
"WOW I spent 400 quid on something the size of a large postage stamp this confirms I am crazy."

After 6 months of use you think
"Awesome read and write speeds, amazing storage capacity, 1/8th the size of standard SSD, reliable performance, good software and I can fit 4 of them in my laptop! Boot to desktop in 9, yes NINE seconds. Of all the samsung SSDs I have bought this is the best. Quick, compact and smart, the Tyrion Lannister of SSDs."

I've replaced my old Sandisk U100 128GB mSata SSD in my Samsung NP800X4C ultrabook with the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD, and so far everything has been really smooth. I used the Samsung Data Migration tool to clone the old SSD to the new one and the process was very straight forward. After cloning I just slotted in the new SSD and booted up and everything worked fine. Yes its expensive (price is 7x as much as a normal HDD), but for its form factor (1/3rd of a credit card), performance and capacity its cutting edge technology. My laptop's only disadvantage was the small SSD it came out with, but with this it is perfect now. Keep in mind this is a TLC SSD. Some cheap enclosures, especially those on the old ASM1053 chip might not be compatible. I used a VisionTek enclosure which has an ASM1153E chipset to be able to clone my old SSD onto the new one.

Samsung have been making SSD's for a few years now. They have just brought these "EVO" drives out using a triple NAND arrangement for the storage cells. This has brought down costs and opened the market up for the home enthusiast. HOWEVER, there is a problem with the firmware on ALL EVO SSD's. The longer a file is untouched, the slower it loads. These drives are supposed to run at 400-500MBs, but some files (as they age on the drive) can load as slowly as 6MBs! This is disgusting, and Samsung are dragging their feet about fixing it. They claim not to be able to reproduce the problem but many of us in overclockers.co.uk and overclock.net have run many benchmarks and all of us have come to the same conclusion - there is a definite "slowdown over time" problem with these drives - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
