I bought this SSD to replace a conventional 500GB SATA hard drive in a Sony VAIO Windows 7 laptop, having previously used an G.Skill 128GB SSD as the O/S drive in a home-built media PC to excellent effect (silent operation being the main criterion at the time). The price and reliability of the latest generation of SSDs, though still not a match for conventional magnetic drives, is now at the point where these are a cost effective option if you value speed, low power consumption, mechanical resilience and silent operation over maximum capacity.

The Samsung SSDs come in three packaging options - the drive on its own, or with a desktop or laptop accessory kit. The desktop accessory kit includes a 3.5" internal mounting caddy with power and SATA cables and a single PC licensed version of Norton Ghost; the laptop accessory kit includes a SATA-USB 2.0 adapter cable and the same version of Norton Ghost. Both kits come with a copy of Samsung Magician 3.1, which allows you to run various performance benchmarking and optimisation tasks, including firmware upgrade, O/S performance optimisation, AHCI check (see below) and so-called 'over-provisioning' (which basically reserves a portion of the raw disk space to improve the performance and endurance of the drive). It's definitely worth installing and running Magician, but I wouldn't bother to install Norton Ghost for reasons outlined below.

I already had a cheap LUPO 2.5" Inch SATA USB 2.0 Hard Drive Case (PC & MAC) - BLACK so I mounted the SSD in this and connected it to the laptop via a USB cable, but the cable provided with the Samsung laptop accessory kit would presumably work equally well.

Bought a few different types of drives for a mass SSD rollout, including Sandisk, OCZ, Intel and these 830 units. We certainly wouldn't buy OCZ again... But this is about the Samsung 830.
Performance was way above the others. We bought two types, the desktop upgrade kit which came with the 3.5" adapter (fantastic) and the laptop which came with a USB to Sata adapter - even handier. Performance is fantastic, they look good enough to use externally, permanently and they're not Sandforce; they're reliable.
So much so, we went all out and bought 90 of them. Not one failure, not one missed beat. Fantastic drives and will be buying more when budgets allow.

Drive was simple to install, up and running in no time.

Windows boots in 15 seconds on SATA 2 3GB/s port on an intel core i5 laptop.

Speeds will show slower than advertised as these results are from a SATA 2 laptop.

This is from the 256GB Drive (I have a 128GB samsung drive in a SATA 3 port on my desktop)

This is taken directly from SAMSUNG SSD Magician Version 3.1 (Included With The Drive)

After much research on the controllers for SSD's i have found that the samsung drive both deliver the performance and reliability that I require. I have had absolutely no problems with the drive installed, no blue screens at all. Runs all applications almost instantly.

Windows is usable instantly as soon as the desktop appears.

10/10 - Have bought one for my desktop which is SATA 3 6GB/sand can post the performance details for that version if requested.

Hope this helps.

Neat and unobtrusive compared to a HDD - you would not know it was in the drive tray if you hadn't installed it yourself -
Just loaded Windows 7 on it and the installation was all over rather quickly - When Windows starts the segmented Windows 7 graphic that starts to form it does not even have time to finish loading before you are onto the next phase.

I know I have next to no programs loaded at the moment but this thing is blisteringly fast.

Fast delivery, well packaged. Slotted straight in, worked no problem! In a shuttle barebone system, was recognised at first boot, installed windows 8 onto it superfast! Definitely much faster than ordinary hard drives, programs and apps open so quickly! Would definitely recommend to anyone.

I've done a lot of research on SSDs before I bought Samsung ones, first 830 128GB for OS drive and now 256GB for games and virtual machines. Samsung are the only ones apart from Intel (more expensive), where all the components are made by one manufacturer, memory chips, controller, interface all made by Samsung. If something is designed from scratch as one complete device, it's usually much more robust and reliable. We have all heard stories about SSDs running on sandforce controllers, and constantly failing on all fronts, something that is less likely to happen on 830s.
Windows 7 benchmark gives me 7.9, which is maximum score that can be received for a storage device. I've had no problems whatsoever installing it with attached SATAIII cables on my 6Gb interfaces. The associated software (not required to run) called Samsung SSD magician, does its job well at disabling built-in services that may shorten the life of any SSD, and are no longer necessary (defragmenter, indexing service, etc). The disk's temperature reported by Magician is below 35 degrees, which is probably artificially raised above my room temp (23) by three high performance HDD WD drives sitting in the same case, running roughly at about 65-70 deg.
On my i7 2600k 3.4GHz box with 16GB RAM box, Windows 7 x64 Home premium, starts in less than 5 seconds, not counting the POST sequence, and is desktop ready in just below 15 s (that included starting the antivirus, firewall, device tools, some background apps, etc). I should mention that it's a 2 years old Windows installation with > 600GB of software (including games) installed, so not a fresh Windows install.

All in all, very good purchase, and acceptable delivery.
