Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Samsung Electronics reaffirms its reputation as a leading innovator in the portable audio space with a new ultra-slim, lightweight flash-memory player that puts 3D sound in the palm of consumers' hands. The YP-Z5 Music Jukebox works seamlessly with music subscription services, and features a long lasting rechargeable battery for up to 24 hours of continuous music enjoyment.

The YP-Z5 displays Samsung's commitment to expanding the market possibilities in the portable digital audio space. Consumers are choosing digital music subscription services and Samsung supports this trend with the first 4GB flash player to offer subscription capabilities. With its 1.8" quality LCD screen, a slim, durable body and extended battery life, the YP-Z5 stands above the competition.

The YP-Z5 is Microsoft Plays For Sure Audio Download and Subscription enabled, making it the first 4GB flash memory MP3 player that supports subscription services such as MTV's Urge, Napster, Rhapsody, and Yahoo. Samsung's music jukebox is a high capacity, ultra-thin and elegantly designed player with a durable aluminium body to prevent scratches and smudges. Weighing in at just over 2 ounces with an ultra-slim size, the Samsung Music Jukebox slips comfortably into a pocket. Samsung's proprietary DNSe Portable 3D Sound Technology offers high quality sound, and the close to 24-hour rechargeable battery life provides round-the-clock music play that far exceeds other high-capacity flash devices.

The 1.8" colour TFT-LCD screen is one of the largest in its class and lets users view photographs and album art with ease. Users can create sizzling slideshows with dynamic effects as well as pan and zoom on digital photos. The unique touch pad interface makes navigating the player's functions a snap, and users can customize their user interface background with any JPEG. The YP-Z5 is music subscription service enabled, so consumers can play DRM content transferred from a PC, and the player supports MP3, WMA, WMA DRM10, and JPEG formats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth It, 15 Sep 2006
The reason why I was looking to buy an mp3 player was to use it at the gym. Therefore, I was looking for a flash memory bases player. As everyone seems to have an ipod at the gym I thought that I should get something different as I think for some it's more of a status symbol than a functional item.
I found myself stumbling across this player as it has the best flash memory I could find. It's basically a rival to the ipod nano in its size but is double the memory for a cheaper price!
Using the player is simple enough, the only problem I had was that I had to organise my mp3 collection something that I hadn't done in a long time. Once that was sorted, it helped a great deal with syncing using Media Player 11. Just plug in the usb cable and jobs a good one. I can imagine that some people would have difficulties with Media Player but then that's not Samsung's fault is it?!
The earphones supplied are good enough for me, although someone has mentioned to me to replace them with ones costing £20 but I don't think you need to do that.
I think its money well spent and I would recommend it to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars a worthy competitor to the ipod , 24 Nov 2006

    (REAL NAME)
I popped my MP3 player cherry with this fine, little piece of electronic kit over 4 months ago now. I wasn't sure at the time of purchase what I really wanted, so as usual I did a bit of research into the portable digital music player market. I read many good things about this product (and was particularly impressed with the comments made by a certain highly reputable consumer magazine). It stood out for me because not only is it small, thin, light and easy on the eye, it utilises software that doesn't require the user to convert standard MP3/WMA format into some bull**** format like that of itunes on iPod and Connect Player on Sony. I've heard many bad things about the functionality of the bug-ridden itunes and connect player, the latter is something I had first hand experience in when helping a mate sort out his new Sony MP3 player - the software was awful and would not operate without a permanent connection to the internet.

As the spec states, the Samsung YP-Z5A is operational with WMP10 - this is incredibly easy to use - it is a simple case of dragging and dropping songs from your music library into the 'sync' list where it is later downloaded onto your player as soon as you click 'start sync.' Pictures can be added in the same simple manner.

Compared to iPod nano, the screen on the Samsung YP-Z5A is bigger and much easier to read - it can display JPEGs to a good standard of resolution. The touch pad is also excellent and is not overly sensitive - certainly no better or worse than that of the iPod. The product is ergonomic so I don't find myself pressing 2 buttons at once - infact it fits nicely! It also appears quite robust so it could withstand heavy knocks, however I don't advise pursuing a practical investigation!

Overall, I'm very happy with the player and would recommend it to anyone - even those of you that aren't quite confident with all things electronic. I would be inclined to give this product 5 stars, but it just misses out due to the battery's random fluctuation in lifespan. Although Samsung claim that the battery life is up to and beyond 30hrs, I seriously doubt this. As is the case with LCD displays, they are a major power consumer and although my player is set to the lowest brightness setting, it is still a big drain on the battery. Sometimes the player will display 3/4 full battery and when you turn it off and back on again it may have dropped to 1/4 full battery. This is misleading - the battery could go flat or it will continue for many hours of play. I guess its very dependent on how often you have the LCD screen on display (i.e. not in sleep mode) and how high your volume setting is.

Nevertheless, a fantastic player (and I didn't even mention how good the sound output is) that should not be overlooked......you would be making a BIG mistake if you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never used one before but, 2 Nov 2006

I am very pleased with it. I did buy it for the spoken word (we tend to buy audio book cds for long car journeys and I like to relisten). I found it easy to use the software (much to my surprise as I'd always avoided the complexities of mp3). I did compare it to the ipod ones, but decided that the name and the zillion accessories and colour choices were just a gimmick plus even I knew 4Gb was a good size for flash memory. Husband bought me lanyard and headphones combined wich has made it very neat to have around my neck with no tangly wires (good for me as I use a nebuliser 4 times a day so tangling wires, tubing and flex would drive me potty). The battery has never let me down and I have it several months now. I should also say, my daughter (11) was very jealous of my new toy and when OH went to the States, instead of bringing back a pile of clutter for her, on his return he bought one for her which she loves. She has the white one, I have the black and I'm considering the silver one for OH for Christmas! As an older user, it took me a few minutes to get used to the sensitivity of the navigation pad, but it's easy to get used to. All in all I've found it to be an excellent piece of kit.
