4.0 out of 5 stars No longer drag and drop by default - beware!, 19 Jan 2008
By R. Tait (Hull, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm the previous owner of the Samsung YP-U1Q and YP-U2R. These are both basically earlier versions of the same model, which I loved (and lost).

This new one has a few changes. The navigation is faster with various improvements, and it's in nice greeny blue LED. There's also the cool but useless light effects of the YP-U2R. The pop out USB connector is a bit flimsy on this one. The new 'touch' controls are not to my taste, and require you to actually look at the player while navigating, but it work well enough.

However there's a MAJOR drawback with this one. The player by is MTP and not UMS by default. What that means is you can't use it to drag-and-drop your music (and other files), treating the device little a little external drive. This was incredibly important to me, and a key feature of the earlier models, which avoided the need to use additional software. Great if that's the way you like to use these things.

But! There's a workaround. To my relief, I found a solution on some blogs and forums - a link to files that enable you to change the machines firmware to UMS. After a bit of fiddling, I've now got a cool and usable player.

Users who are a bit less technically minded might be uncomfortable doing this (you might render your device non-functional), or might never think to find it. Otherwise, it's a fine workaround.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect little number, 8 May 2008
By Mr. P. E. A. Mcarthur "PyroTyger" (Grimsby, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Personally I couldn't be happier with this player. I've been holding off for some months on buying one, looking for just the right set of features: Small, USB-chargeable, Drag-&-drop filesystem, long-life, decent feature set, and a decent price.

So far I've been pleasantly impressed on every score. Some previous reviews gave me cause for concern, but at £35 I thought it was worth the risk.

The touch-sensitive buttons are indeed sensitive. There is, however, a HOLD SWITCH for anyone engaged in physical activity, making this a non-issue.

My unit was delivered with the latest firmware (v1.13), and drag-&-drop file management seems fine via USB. Also, the player intuitively and intelligently organises the media according to artist, album, genre, playlist etc, which was a pleasant surprise.

Perhaps most impressive of all is the extensive Settings menu - this is a highly customisable unit, for those who are so inclined. There is a dearth of features for adjusting the EQ (manual or preset), 3D, Bass Enhancement etc, and plenty of useful other bits besides. Having a button with a user-customisable function was a particularly nice surprise :-)

I've had no problems at all with the FM radio. You can adjust the sensitivity of the Auto-Preset seeker to account for being in a high- or low-signal area, and it's been much more reliable so far than most earphone-aerial radios I've had.

Finally, it does look ace. Subtle but stylish, in my opinion. Nice blue-glowing screen, brushed black finish, and small & light enough to clip to anything without a fuss. Why anyone would pay nearly twice as much for an iPod Shuffle - with all the inherent limitations - is beyond me.

If I had to criticise I'd pick on the included earphones, which sound great but are merely adequate for comfort - but then given the price of the unit as a whole, this is nit-picking in the extreme. I'm really, really pleased with this purchase!

2.0 out of 5 stars Controls not too easy, 3 Jan 2008
By K. J. Mcdonald - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this for my mother who is not to technology savy. I based the purchase on the pervious model which I own. This new model however has touch sensitive controls for volume, next track and enter the menu. This becomes a nightmare as it is very very touch sensitive and you frequently passed your fingers over the unit and the track skips to the next. Even for me it is annoying and for older people very difficult to use. For me with the old model I would have the unit in my pockets and change tracks without looking at it. Impossible with this new version. The unit does have a button lock, but even when you're looking at it with the lock off you still make unneccasry mistakes. samsung for your next model put some buttons on the thing.

I will be getting a refund or exchange, based soley on the touch sensitive controls which spoils a good player.
