Positive:
Perfect picture quality; superb 3D rendition; beautiful design.
Negative - but not a big issue:
Need Samsung active 3D glasses. Pity you can't use passive (cinema) glasses. Note that two pairs of Samsung 3050 were supplied with the TV, including batteries.
I bought UE46D7000 without any 'LUXXU' letters after it. I have no idea what the letters mean.
Looking around a TV shop at all the high-end TVs, all the manufacturers produce excellent quality, but choosing between the best of them, the picture on the Samsung D7000 series (and D8000) was noticably better than other TVs. Details are displayed perfectly within areas of strong (but true) colours, and it gives astonishing realism in the 3D playback.
Stunning Design
A natural advantage of this screen is that the frame is almost non-existent - the picture goes right out to the slender 8mm bezel so you can have a bigger screen size in the same physical space compared to other TVs. Furthermore, the D7000 and D8000 series look beautiful - with the very fine design and the narrow bezel around the edge.
Picture in Picture (PIP)
When I bought this TV, the Samsung models were the only televisions available here that included PIP function, which is extremely useful for example if you are watching sport and your partner is watching something less interesting. It also helps you in televised films during an advert break, because you can watch something else but keep your adverts in the corner of the screen to see when the film resumes. Note: you need a separate external tuner to view two simultaneous TV channels in PIP, because the D7000 has only one tuner. I have read that you can browse the web on one picture whilst watching a program in the other; I cannot confirm this because I haven't tried. But I haven't been able to play YouTube videos in PIP at the same time as a TV program, which means either it's not possible, or it's tricky to configure.
Installation and Configuration...
...was very easy. There's a first-time setup wizard to take you through the steps. Anything you set can be subsequently changed in the main menu, if necessary. Likewise, you can skip any of the steps and then configure them at a later time in the main menu.
3D
The 3D rendition on this tele is astonishing. Movies filmed in 3D appear to exist truly within your living room, with some details right in front of your face and others a long way behind the screen. And yet the pictures do not lose a spot of sharp detail. The TV can even convert standard 2D pictures to 3D, and does a really good job of it (although clearly not as jaw-dropping as films designed/filmed for 3D).
My only negative issue is around the 3D glasses. You must get Samsung active glasses, which require a watch-battery (or recharging in the more expensive glasses). But this is not a big issue when you consider that nearly all the other big manufacturers (Sony, Philips, Panasonic etc) also require their own active 3D glasses. LG offer passive glasses 3D sets, but (to me) the LG picture quality was not as good.
The active glasses are fine when you're watching the TV. But if you look at any other light source they visibly flicker, which means you have to close curtains or dim lights to avoid that flicker around the the light source. Not a big issue when you're watching a great 3D film in crisp beautiful detail...
Backlight
The backlight throws some slightly lighter patches over black areas, which is noticeable only when viewed in a dark room. The lighter patches are barely visible under normal conditions, and do not irritate me but if they do it's no problem - you can easily turn the backlight right down for evening viewing and turn it up during the day or in well lit room. The default setting was 15 (range 0-25) and I tend to leave it at about 8. The backlight makes more sense for 3D viewing, as the brightness appears reduced when viewed through the glasses in 3D.
Conclusion
I would strongly recommend this TV or any in the Samsung D7000/D8000 series if it fits your budget. I'm stunned by the gorgeous picture quality, and astonished by the 3D.
