LED Display Technology: LED (light-emitting diode) TVs are actually a type of LCD TV. LCD HDTVs use standard compact fluorescent tubes to illuminate the picture. LED HDTVs, on the other hand, replace those fluorescent tubes with backlighting technology. LED TVs might therefore say "LCD display" on the packaging--this is perfectly normal. We bought this recently from a high-street retailer (sorry Amazon - delivery from the marketplace seller was going to take too long despite paying for the 1-2 day delivery which it turned out would actually take a week) and are delighted with the set. When we got it we were amazed at how light it is - despite being a 40 inch set it is incredibly light and easy to carry, and once we'd unpacked the box we had it ready to go in just a few minutes, only having to attach the stand (this needs eight screws which are supplied - it can be wall mounted if required) and plug everything in. There are lots of connectors on the back, but only one scart socket, but that wasn't a problem for us.

Once connected, the TV more or less set itself up, only requiring a few questions to be answered. We use Freeview so I can't comment on connectivity to other services. The set normally boots to the SMART home screen, but this can be changed in the options menu, and ours now launches at the last channel we had watched.

The set comes with two remote controls - a "normal" remote covered with buttons, and secondly a "smart" remote, which has a touch pad you can use gestures on (swipe to change channels etc.) or draw channel numbers with your fingers, even press a microphone button and talk to the remote to make the TV do things. To be honest the smart remote seems a bit of a gimmick. There are also two sets of 3D glasses in the box but we've yet to use them as we've not got anything that uses 3D.

The smart features on the TV are excellent. The set has built-in wifi and connects to my BT Infinity broadband nicely without using cables. Sometimes there is a little buffering when viewing the likes of HD shows on iPlayer, but that's just down to my network.

A long-standing friend of mine in the U.K. recently had to replace his ancient analogue Loewe TV, because after many years of faithful service, one evening the telly finally gave up the ghost (sadly it was unrepairable, due to lack of spare parts) and obviously needed replacing at short notice.

Ironically he saw the Samsung UE40F6500 the very first day that it was put on display at his local branch of John Lewis and after inspecting various competing manufacturers HD screens in the immediate vicinity, he decided to purchase this Samsung model there and then.

I have to say that by comparison with earlier flatscreen TV panels of a few years back, the UE40F6500 has a remarkably thin and attractive bezel, which makes viewing HD TV broadcasts an absolute pleasure. Thankfully the screen has a matte finish, thus neatly avoiding the problem of reflection that many glossy screens suffer from.

Incidentally, there remains the odd occasion when I still find it somewhat disconcerting to view such a large picture that remains so consistently pin sharp from edge to edge, yet without any discernible distortion. Bearing in mind how slim this TV actually is, I reckon the internal speakers seem to do a pretty good overall job of conveying sound, whether that be speech or music.

Additionally the chrome-finish stand mount is thankfully 'wobble-free' when the LCD panel is attached, making the TV feel reassuringly solid ! During his visit to the store my friend experienced an impressive 3D demonstration whilst wearing a pair of active glasses and is currently thinking about buying a suitable Blu-ray player in the near future.

It might be of interest to learn that in the U.K., Richer Sounds are currently selling Samsung UE40F6500's at the reduced price of just £649.

I bought this TV roughly a month ago, value for money it won't be beaten by many. It was on offer for £550 when I got it from John Lewis. I went for 40" as it's for my bedroom so it is more then I need. The screen is crystal clear with 1080p resolution making sport/movie watching very enjoyable. Smart TV UI syncs lovely with my virgin box, built in apps including Netflix stream 1080p with a decent wired network connect (preferably gigabit). Also has 3D functionality coming with two pairs of glasses.

I wouldn't think twice in recommending this TV to anybody.

Dislikes: the digital audio outputs are only stereo even if the inputs are Dolby Digital, etc.
