I knew I wanted a 32" LED TV with Freeview HD tuner. I narrowed down my shortlist to two candidates: the Samsung UE32L65XX series and the Panasonic TX-L32D28X. Both had their pros and cons. After much thinking, it all came down to personal preference and as I have had Samsung before and found it reliable, I went for that option.
I ordered the telly on Friday evening from Amazon. Even I was surprised when the delivery man woke me up next day morning. Wow - that was superfast! Well done Amazon.
In terms of design it's a very good tv: The white frame looks real nice, compliments beautifully to the white wall. Who said that tvs should be dark? In various reviews on the internet I read that many people say that the remote is ugly. While it certainly would not win too many design awards, I found it ok and functionally it's very good. My only problem would be the "chicken-foot" stand which is outright ugly, but as I wanted to mount it on the wall that was not a problem for me. The wall mount however requires specific length of M8 screws which were different to my previous wall mount configuration (also from Samsung) and it took me all Saturday to find the right screws in a specialist shop. Wasn't happy about that.
The menu is well designed, both functionally and visually pleasing. No annoying lag time after key press as with most other tvs on the market. Sound is ok, but certainly not a strong selling point. Best to connect the tv to a decent speaker system. In-built Freeview tuner is weak though, could not pick up the HD channels and ITV channels even though that I should have an excellent reception according to the freeview website. I am yet to install a signal amplifier to see if that fixes the problem.
Picture quality is fab in my opinion. Blacks are nice and deep, colours are vivid and can be customised to the most tiny detail if you are not happy with the factory pre-sets. Even SD channels are rendered beautifully. Only small problem is viewing angle - the colours and contrast looses it's appeal outside the 30 degree range but if you look at it from a fixed place (e.g. couch) and optimise the tilt to that location, it will not be a big problem. Connectivity is good too, 4 HDMIs, and they all work all right. I can connect my PC on 1920x1080 resolution. Games look beautiful. Blue ray via PS3 is amazing! It sucks though to put the connection panel to the side of the tv, so close to the edge. You have to be very tricky so that you can conceal the cables.
The internet tv functionality works perfectly via cable although choice is very limited. More of a gimmick if you ask me. Rather connect your laptop via HDMI and enjoy full internet functionality. Those who do not have a network cable at the back of the tv will have to pay for Samsung's own wifi dongle. The cheapest price I could find it on the net was £45 - a big rip off if you ask me.
All in all, a great looking tv with good functionality and amazing picture quality, but with a handful of annoying (but minor) flaws.
