This little computer was bought as a replacement for a bigger and more powerful laptop, and it took some time to get used to its limitations, but now I love it. After getting rid of a lot of the heavy pre-installed software it works very fast and boots in seconds. I find that Google's Chrome browser works best, and takes up less of the screen. The biggest advantage this laptop, however, is the long battery life. It promises up to eleven hours, and it lives up to its promise.

Dont get me wrong. The Samsung netbooks are great. Previously I owned a N140.

Whilst the NB30 is another great netbook give some serious consideration to whether you really need the touchscreen. My opinion is its a great technology on something like a tablet or slate but not on a netbook. The screen of the NB30 is slightly beveled to the surrounding area which means the edges are less reponsive. You can improve things with the etouch utility but not a level where I felt I got the desired response - so I ended up just using the keyboard and tracker pad.

So, the N220 makes a great and cheaper alternaitve to the NB30 if you don't need a touchscreen. Not sure because I haven't seen the N220 but comparing the N140 with the NB30 the screen is slightly more reflective which I think could because it is a touchscreen.

An excellent little netbook. I worried that I would have trouble with the small screen coming from a 15" laptop, but not at all. Battery life excellent, robust and light, reliable. I have the touch screen, it works and amuses my son but I am just as happy with the mousepad. It comes with a perfectly adequate and well fitting 'skin' so I would advise that you do not purchase one.
Startup is not as fast as I had hoped but I am unsure as to how to remove the bloatware mentioned in another review. I'm sure this is the cause and I shall endeavour to rectify.
I have no hesitation in recommending this netbook.

Positives:

Very good battery life
Plenty fast enough for a netbook
Touchscreen is very useful if a little ineffective with any operating system available at the moment (android x86 might be great on this when it's released)
Rugged case
Good keyboard
Good storage

Negatives:

Case is a little plasticy
Supplied software is awful - it runs windows 7 starter edition and a truly silly amount of worthless bloatware installed at first startup if you like it or not - system sits and installs guffware for literally two hours on first startup. As a result the system is very sluggish on first use which made me think I'd bought a lemon - this is not the case but you need to remove a lot of rubbish first, in fact I'd recommend a complete reinstall. If you're not computer-savy enough to do this, I'd give this netbook a miss, it's that bad. For speed and ease of use out of the box this is a definite fail.

OS
Windows starter edition is fine if you're happy to use MS and runs plenty fast enough IF you can get rid of the bloatware the pc installs on first startup. Ubuntu 10.10 runs fine in its various flavours though you'll need to add samsung support packs which is easy to do if you're even slightly linux-familiar (i'm no pro). Xubuntu is particularly swift on this PC and is my OS of choice - together with chromium/opera it's very swift. Also it's nice to create a nice big chunky application launcher on the left to use with the touch screen interface.

So...
Out of the box - two stars at best
With xubuntu - five stars

Conclusion - buy with confidence if you're the sort to customise, avoid if you don't know how to do this or wouldn't want to.

I have had this laptop about a month now and feel it is time for a review.

Out of the box it is a decent laptop, it has a very rugged feel, looks great and the touch screen really is a cool factor which surprisingly gets a lot of use. (One concern with the description here is they say it is 'multitouch' this is a bit misleading and doesn't fully feature - I will come onto that later...)

First startup is a little slow and I recomend getting rid of a lot of the pre-installed software as already mentioned. I also upgraded my RAM to 2GB which makes a massive difference.

As I mentioned previously the touchscreen was a bit of a disappointment for me, although it works fine, windows does not recognise it as a true touchscreen which means you miss out on a lot of features that are included in Windows 7 (if you upgrade from 7 starter like I did) This allows you to pinch to zoom, use a second finger as right-click, handwriting recognition plus lots more.

After a lot of searching I have managed to get windows to recognise the tochscreen as a HID touchscreen rather than the eGalax USB mouse input. After doing this I can now use all of the windows 7 touch features and the touch screen is MUCH more responsive and accurate.

In order to do the above you will need to uninstall the eGalax software and then install some multi touch drivers - google "multi touch vista" and follow the instructions to install the drivers. Once you have installed these windows 7 will see the screen as a HID.

As my laptop stands I give it 5 stars although out of the box I personally would say 3-4 but it depends on what you were expecting - I can see why others rate it 5 as is, it is a great netbook.
