As noted by a previous reviewer, this is surprisingly fast, there's no sense that I'm working with a "slow" 5400rpm drive at all. I'd read that it was a speedy unit in other reviews, or I wouldn't have chosen it. But my main criterion was its low energy-use and heat dissipation, because I was aiming for a reasonably quiet PC without lots of whirring fan noise.
The drive is basically inaudible to me except when seeking, and even then it's much quieter than my other drives (including a couple of 7200rpm 500Gb Samsungs that I have). In my cosy stove-heated living room it runs at 28-30C in a minimally cooled case, this shows that the drive isn't dumping much heat and also bodes well for the life of the drive, though time will tell on the latter point. By comparison, the 7200rpm Samsungs can get disturbingly warm unless provided with their own fans, and even then they require additional air extraction to vent the heat they generate from the case.
One thing I will mention is that I'm using this drive in a system with enough RAM to disable paging entirely. Even given its speedy subjective performance for loading files, I'm not sure that it would be wise to put a page file on a 5400rpm device. So if you're only planning to have one drive, and need to have paging turned on, then this might not be ideal. Otherwise, it's well worth your consideration.
