5.0 out of 5 stars Devilishly fast! 23 Aug 2009
I purchased this drive elsewhere (needed a guaranteed next day delivery) so my review is based purely on the drive alone and not on Amazon's packaging of such delicate equipment, as questioned on reviews from other hard drives here.

Samsung may not be market leaders in hard drives right now, unlike Western Digital and Seagate, but they unquestionably know how to make good hard drives. This is my fourth Samsung hard drive, with my previous three still in use and working after years of service. The whole intention of these 'Green' drives is to consume less power, produce less heat, and be quiet. Samsung's hard drives are well known to run cool & quiet, but this drive takes it to a new level!

After 24 hours of being connected, with over 200GB of data transferred and several hours of constant becnhmarking and testing, the drive is a very cool 23 degrees. During a file transfer, the disk is virtually silent. The side of my PC case is off, with the hard drive sitting outside of the case itself... I cannot hear it over my fans even when set to their lowest settings. If there is any noise from the drive at all, then it will all but become extinct when actually inside a case.

To the uneducated computer owner, some hard drives are better suited to some tasks than others. For instance, this drive has 2 excellent uses. Home Theater PC's (HTPC) or storage/backup drive. Due to it's supremely quiet noise and very low temperature, it is perfectly matched for a HTPC which is likely to be in your living room or bedroom - two rooms where lower noise is more important than better performance. Personally though I am using it as a backup & storage drive. The drive is surprisingly fast...

I have installed this HD in a Synology 109 server so far (been about 1month) its working great! It was very easy to install snap in one cable and screw in 4 support screws took me 5mins (you dont need to be a techy for this). The drive itself is pretty fast and for the most part fairly silent - i have it in my lounge and frankly the Virgin box Hard drive makes probably 5x more noise. The HD also looks pretty strong and well constructed - def worth a look!

I bought this drive last week and it arrived yesterday.

The product is fine, quiet, quick and good value for money - does exactly what I needed it for (extra storage in my HTPC setup). I am not someone who benchmarks equipment like this so I am only commenting qualitatively, but so far I am happy.

My main gripe is the packaging in which the drive was delivered, which was far from sufficient. Essentially the drive was housed in a thin clear plastic box with approximately 10 mm space around the outside (making the total package about the size and shape of a thick paperback book). This packaging is called "seashell packaging". Then this box was then merely wrapped in the same cardboard surround that one might expect a paperback book to be delivered in.

This type of packaging offers insufficient vibration protection and there were no markings to denote that it contained a fragile computer component. During delivery it would not surprise me if the package could be exposed to significant impact and vibration would could easily cause catastrophic damage to the drive. I would expect such an item to be delivered in a 150mm by 100mm box with fitted padding (or something similar) to ensure safe arrival. Of course, being the size and shape it was, the drive was posted through the letterbox and allowed to fall 1m onto my hardwood floor!!!!!!

I suppose the Amazon rationale is that if 1 in 20 drives are damaged then they will still save money overall on replacing that one drive, but I question how much this transit might have affected the life of my drive!

I have had a look into minimum packaging requirement and managed to find the Seagate returns advice for minimum acceptable returns packaging (I am sure Samsung would have similar standards([...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing HDD 31 May 2011

First of all, great packaging. And by great I mean GREAT. Finally no more waste of cardboard/plastic for useless boxes.
Second and more important, I bought this hdd for my Popcorn Hour, formatted it on my mac, works wonderful mounted in the Popcorn, it just makes a little spinning noise when powered up, then you hear nothing more. It also doesn't produce that much heat, so I would recommend it if you do not have a big computer tower or lots of fans into it.

So far, so good I'd say! 5 stars all the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product 1 Mar 2010

This hard drive arrived quickly and I had it inside my PC (using the enclosed screws) in about 30mins. Took about same amount of time to make my PC recognise it. Once it was recognised I did a quick format and that was it. I am using it for back up of all my files from 3 PCs and it copes easily. No noise from the fan when the PC case is all put together.
Would have no hesitation in buying this again.

As noted by a previous reviewer, this is surprisingly fast, there's no sense that I'm working with a "slow" 5400rpm drive at all. I'd read that it was a speedy unit in other reviews, or I wouldn't have chosen it. But my main criterion was its low energy-use and heat dissipation, because I was aiming for a reasonably quiet PC without lots of whirring fan noise.

The drive is basically inaudible to me except when seeking, and even then it's much quieter than my other drives (including a couple of 7200rpm 500Gb Samsungs that I have). In my cosy stove-heated living room it runs at 28-30C in a minimally cooled case, this shows that the drive isn't dumping much heat and also bodes well for the life of the drive, though time will tell on the latter point. By comparison, the 7200rpm Samsungs can get disturbingly warm unless provided with their own fans, and even then they require additional air extraction to vent the heat they generate from the case.

One thing I will mention is that I'm using this drive in a system with enough RAM to disable paging entirely. Even given its speedy subjective performance for loading files, I'm not sure that it would be wise to put a page file on a 5400rpm device. So if you're only planning to have one drive, and need to have paging turned on, then this might not be ideal. Otherwise, it's well worth your consideration.
