Is it switched on?, 19 Sep 2008
This review is from: Samsung Spin Point F1 1TB Internal SATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
Very impressive drive - I've had a couple of failed drives so was looking for an alternative for an external caddy backup solution. Very quiet in operation and good transfer speed through an external caddy connected by eSATA about 2-3 times the speed of my old IDE drive.
Highly recommended.
A little update - some nine months in and having been used for regular backups in an external eSATA caddy this drive has died. It simply locks up the system when switched on and gives a gentle tick tick tick sound.
Should have known better than to trust a Samsung product as it seems more recent reviewers are finding to their cost. My advice now is to avoid this product like the plague and go for WD or Seagate - people who know the drive business and how to build them!
That's what I'll be doing rather the wasting my money on any more of this third rate third world rubbish. As for Samsung's customer support and so called guarantees - been there before regarding mobile phones. You'll be forever chasing shadows there so don't bother. This is an edit so I can't change the star rating but would now give it a 1.

2 failures with this drive so far, 7 May 2009
This review is from: Samsung Spin Point F1 1TB Internal SATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I ordered two of these drives, and have them in a RAID array. I run them from a Gigabyte motherboard.
Within a few months one drive had completely failed. Samsung directed me towards a company called Rexo that they have outsourced all hard drive returns to (presumably to deal with the volume?).
Before sending rexo your HDD I'd take a few moments to find out a bit about the company, maybe even just looking at their building and its location on the satellite veiw of Google maps! It may make you want to wipe your drive incredibly thoroughly, or not send it at all.
Anyway Rexo's policy is simply to send you out a 'reconditioned' hard drive - ie a second hand one that has failed, but they think they have repaired it.
The replacement drive arrived from them, and again has failed within a few months.
I have been trying to get Samsung to send me a replacement drive that is new, but they refuse to do this.
My next step is to use consumer legislation to try to get my money back - and then purchase hard drives from another manufacturer.
This looked attractive, but simply isn't up to the job, and the support is not there to back it up.

PVR (Sky HD) Use, 21 Nov 2008
This review is from: Samsung Spin Point F1 1TB Internal SATA Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
Got this drive over a year ago. Purposely for use in my Sky HD box. It does what it says on the tin! Very quiet in operation.
To start I had to initiallise it in my PC (I used external caddies). Then I used 'copy+' to copy my original HDD over to the F1. Effortlessly done. Well impressed. About to purchase another on for my new Samsung HD box.
