3.0 out of 5 stars Good laptop but a few flaws 24 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase
before you buy this I suggest looking at the notebook review forums under the thread 'Samsung Series 7 Chronos (NP700Z4 & NP700Z5 series) Owners Lounge' as it lists all the general issues with this laptop & suggests fixes.

Good points

Feels sturdy
looks not as bad some reviews suggest
keyboard is excellent
track-pad also good.
lack of bloatware
large trackpad - supports useful 2 and 3 finger multi touch commands, left click is with light press, right click is used by clicking the base area of the trackpad. Takes a little getting used to but i'm used to it now took a few days. Would still prefer a mouse though!

Bad points
Spacebar doesn't always register (could be an issue with way I type, I've only seen one other review that mentions this)
Screen - colour is vary washed out - there is a colour profile in the forum above that improves this, but it still isn't great.
Screen - viewing angle - not room for a lot of travel in any direction, the sweet spot is very small and the picture degrades rapidly outside of sweet spot

Major Fault
Open GL graphical switching issue - Youtube HD and Vimeo HD cause the graphics driver to crash and will freeze the laptop. This also affects gaming, but there is a workaround on the above forum to get games working, but it means using an unsupported driver. There is currently no way to get youtube HD or vimeo HD to work and anything that uses Open GL may have issues.

This should be fixed with a BIOS update in the future, but you never know it may not! Check the forum to see if its been fixed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I owned MacBook Pro 15" early 2011 model... 5 Jan 2012
So, after 6 months of using MacBook Pro 15" (early 2011 model, with Thunderbolt, i7 2.0, 4GB/500GB/256MB VRAM), which costed me double the price of this Samsung, let me share some initial thoughts. I was never an Apple fan. I love their iPad, would not trade it for anything, had it almost two years now. But, computer, that's something else. I've changed almost 10 laptops in last 15 years, so I've seen a lot of things.

I was observing this computer since it's introduction end of August 2011. Couldn't believe how hard it was actually to get to it. Especially since I wanted UK keyboard (I'm in Croatia, but I don't see it on local market anytime soon). I could get German or Italian, but at higher cost and weird keyboard layout/characters I don't really need. So, I saw it on John Lewis at 849, Amazon had same price, but while arranging delivery, JL stock was sold and Amazon price went up to 899. still a great deal for such laptop.

I loved the packaging (box) of Samsung. OK, it's "somewhat" copy (by size) of Apple's packaging, but is good quality, nice design. I didn't like the cheap plastic feel of styrofoam in the box, but that's not huge issue. Design of this computer is awesome. Left me speechless, really. I saw 14" version in live before getting this, but this felt so small, hard to believe it's 15.6" screen. I got UK power plug, so had to buy new cable, but that's OK. The only thing that is ugly, or better said, not designed, is the power adapter. Just generic, ugly, black thing. And too thick cable.

Since I am dependent on some Windows-only apps, I was kind-of forced to use my MacBook Pro through BootCamp, in Windows 7. It run well, Apple did a nice job with drivers, but I hated always running fans and I just couldn't get to like MacOS style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best laptop I have owned 3 Feb 2012
By Kurt
Had this laptop for over a month and don't have a bad word to say about it. After reading the mixed reviews i was skeptical about buying this product but i'm so glad i ended up going for it. It looks great and has great performance too! The screen looks amazing with its super thin frame, and the laptop feels a lot less bulkier than other 15inch models that i have had. I understand people having problems with the touch pad as I too had problems with it at first, however after having the laptop for a week and playing with the sensitivity settings I find it a real pleasure to use! I would strongly recomend this laptop to anyone who wants a smart looking, well built quad core high end laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome machine, true MacBook pro rival 17 Feb 2012
By Chrism
Firstly let me tell you I looked at many alternatives when my trusty Compaq NC6400 finally just didn't have enough power for the demanding photo editing I use my laptop for. I did even consider going to the dark side but I've always been a PC user, all my software is for PC and so I started searching for a new powerful laptop. The Samsung Series 7 Chronos was the answer, there was not one rival machine that ticked every single box, I was looking for:

Quad Core I7 Power,
A high resolution 1600x900 minimum display of at least 14inches,
8GB Ram
A large hard disk or 256GB SSD
Portability, sleek looks
Aluminium chassis.
Reasonably light weight

The new 2012 Series 9 came close and was very tempting with pretty much one of the best displays in the world but it will only ship with much slower I7 dual core low voltage chips, the XPS 15Z was also a possibility but was bulky, ugly and once again was Dual core only.

The brand new HP Envy 15 came the closest and also had the option of a very nice Full HD display but was a little chunky and heavy in comparison to the Samsung and it is not yet available in the UK.

As for the Chronos, The trackpad is very good and not nearly as bad as some people have said, just update the driver. The Keyboard is slick and fast to type on and has a lovely backlight. The screen is very bright at 300nits but is Matte which suits my image editing down to the ground. The chassis is slim, aluminium mostly all over (except the base and palmrest) Then there's the speed....
OMG, this thing is a flying machine!! It shaved 3 1/2 minutes of a 20 minute photoshop test that I ran on my friends 2011 Macbook pro!
