Manufacturer's Description

With the world’s first front and back LCD, Samsung’s ST550 provides the easiest way to take the perfect self portrait, either by yourself or with friends or family, every time! On the front of the camera is a 1.5” LCD that shows you exactly what the picture will look like, so you can be a part of the picture as well as the photographer. When you tap the front LCD, it turns on and automatically goes into Self-Portrait mode. You can also turn on the front LCD with a simple selection through the intuitive interface. As soon as you smile, the camera automatically takes the picture! But the dual LCDs do more. In Children mode, the front LCD plays a fun animation to capture a child’s attention while taking their photo. Also, to ensure you take a photo of your subject while they’re smiling, the front LCD will display a “smiley face” when the shutter is pushed halfway to signal when they should smile. The front LCD displays other useful information, such as Macro and Flash modes, and provides a preview of a self-timed shot, plus a countdown timer.

On the reverse, the camera features the world’s highest resolution 3.5” wide touch Screen LCD, almost four times the resolution of many other cameras, complete with haptic feedback for ease of use.

Complementing this, the 12.2 mega pixel ST550 also uses the perfect combination of a 27mm wide angle Schneider KREUZNACH lens with 4.6x optical zoom. This gives the photographer a wider shooting range from a shorter distance, producing clear, clean images.

The Samsung ST-550 is one of the more advanced models in their compact camera range, and they really have thrown everything at this model.

Probably the most unusual (and genuinely useful) feature is the front-facing mini-screen which serves a dual purpose when taking self-portraits. It provides you with an accurate countdown when using a timed exposure, and rather more usefully - allows you to take photos of yourself by seeing what the camera is seeing before you either press the shutter button, or configure it to automatically fire when it detects you smiling. This works well. Of the two, the latter is definitely the preferred method, unless of course you don't want a shot of you smiling...

The second feature you'll immediately notice that is somewhat unusual, is what Samsung refer to as 'haptic'. This is essentially small vibrations that the camera emits during certain operations to give positive feedback that you've affected something. It feels a little like a mobile phone vibrate alert going off for a fraction of a second. This is actually surprisingly helpful, especially if you are navigating through the touch-screen menu. This by nature doesn't give any positive feedback like a button would, and you may well decide to disable the bleeps and bloops in the menu system, as they can be disturbing in certain situations, so the haptic feedback fills the gap. Seems like a minor feature, but having used it, I really like it.

You can alter the quality and aspect ratio of the photos you take easily from a pop-up menu around the edge of the screen - this varies from 12MP right down to 1MP, giving you a way to make sure you only consume as much memory as you really need on the card.

This camera is great! If you've used a digicam before then you probably won't even need the instruction manual (supplied on CD, but with a printed Quick Start manual). It looks really smart and is pretty small (only a little larger than my mobile phone). I did buy this mainly for the front screen which is a great feature for me because I take a lot of self-portraits on holiday - they always seem to have a head chopped off or an arm in the picture or a weird expression on my face. But now I've got the camera, that is only one of the fantastic things about it! The main screen is absolutely awesome. Really large and looks very nice. The touch operation is great, easy to use and intuitive. Even if you don't know what an icon or option means, just hold your finger over it and it gives a text description.

The pics come out great and the HD video is really good too. The face tracking and blink detection are brilliant. There are so many options that you'll always find a suitable one for the situation, again just hold your finger over each icon and it describes it in plain English.

A few negative points... as you can see from the minor nature of these, if that's all that's wrong with it, then it must really be good!

    * The USB cable is proprietary. Why oh why can't it be a standard one? It means that I have yet another cable to keep track of and carry around. Also the cable is only about 18 inches long, unless you've got a USB extension cable you'll have to put the camera very close to the PC when it's connected, or to the power socket when it's charging. But the power plug it comes with is great, it is basically a 3-pin plug with a USB socket on top. So I'll be able to use it to charge all my other USB-only gadgets too, that I previously could only charge from a PC!

I got this camera after seeing the adverts on TV after a brilliant innovative product from samsung. The purpose of this camera is for taking photos of yourself whilst you hold the camera, which i must imagine is going to attract a massive camera market. The front lcd screen isnt very big, but it is clear and sharp enough to see the photo you are taking. I must admit though, taking photos of yourself and getting everything you want included in the picture can be quite hard to get use to but it certainly is worth it in the end. The camera also has the usual; face detection, optical image stabilisation, face tracking etc.

The lcd screen on the back takes up all the space it can because it is a touchscreen. This is very easy to use, and probably one of the best responding touch screens i have used in my opinion. Like most other samsung option menus, it is very easy to navigate and adjust any settings to your own liking.

The photos i have taken have been very good quality for a digital camera, however, I expect this from a £200+ camera. The pictures can be taken at 12megapixels, but this can be lowered if required. I also have a Panasonic fx150 which takes better quality photos than this camera, but I am not too bothered about quality but rather about functionality and ease of use, which the Samsung is definatly better at. I have a 4GB sd card in the camera and I estimate roughly 900-1000 photos being able to be stored on it.
