With the world’s first front and back LCD, Samsung’s ST550 provides the easiest way to take the perfect self portrait, either by yourself or with friends or family, every time! On the front of the camera is a 1.5” LCD that shows you exactly what the picture will look like, so you can be a part of the picture as well as the photographer. When you tap the front LCD, it turns on and automatically goes into Self-Portrait mode. You can also turn on the front LCD with a simple selection through the intuitive interface. As soon as you smile, the camera automatically takes the picture! But the dual LCDs do more. In Children mode, the front LCD plays a fun animation to capture a child’s attention while taking their photo. Also, to ensure you take a photo of your subject while they’re smiling, the front LCD will display a “smiley face” when the shutter is pushed halfway to signal when they should smile. The front LCD displays other useful information, such as Macro and Flash modes, and provides a preview of a self-timed shot, plus a countdown timer.

On the reverse, the camera features the world’s highest resolution 3.5” wide touch Screen LCD, almost four times the resolution of many other cameras, complete with haptic feedback for ease of use.

Complementing this, the 12.2 mega pixel ST550 also uses the perfect combination of a 27mm wide angle Schneider KREUZNACH lens with 4.6x optical zoom. This gives the photographer a wider shooting range from a shorter distance, producing clear, clean images.

    I got this camera after seeing the adverts on TV after a brilliant innovative product from samsung. The purpose of this camera is for taking photos of yourself whilst you hold the camera, which i must imagine is going to attract a massive camera market. The front lcd screen isnt very big, but it is clear and sharp enough to see the photo you are taking. I must admit though, taking photos of yourself and getting everything you want included in the picture can be quite hard to get use to but it certainly is worth it in the end. The camera also has the usual; face detection, optical image stabilisation, face tracking etc.

    The lcd screen on the back takes up all the space it can because it is a touchscreen. This is very easy to use, and probably one of the best responding touch screens i have used in my opinion. Like most other samsung option menus, it is very easy to navigate and adjust any settings to your own liking.

    The photos i have taken have been very good quality for a digital camera, however, I expect this from a £200+ camera. The pictures can be taken at 12megapixels, but this can be lowered if required. I also have a Panasonic fx150 which takes better quality photos than this camera, but I am not too bothered about quality but rather about functionality and ease of use, which the Samsung is definatly better at. I have a 4GB sd card in the camera and I estimate roughly 900-1000 photos being able to be stored on it.

    The ST550 may be the first digital camera to have a screen on its front, but this isn't a gimmick at all. In fact, it's pretty useful for taking self-shots, and also for taking photos of easily distracted children when in 'child mode'. Child mode works by playing a little animation on the front screen that gets the little ones' attention. I've had quite a bit of trouble getting my 2 year old to stay in shot and looking in the right direction before - not so with this camera.

    The camera is nicely sized too; it's not too small to be fiddly (once you've got the battery and memory card in, that is), and feels good in the hand. The touch screen is fantastic, and many people have remarked about its size and clarity. The screen is responsive and user-friendly.

    When in video mode (it'll shoot 720p which is nice) sound is not recorded whilst the zoom is operated, but that's not the end of the world. I'd try not to use the zoom whilst shooting video anyway, since the change in zoom level is rather abrupt.

    Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase - it certainly turns heads with its styling, relatively big zoom capability and massive touch screen. I read a few reviews before I parted with my cash, and generally, they are all very complimentary.

    I've used a few Samsung cameras in the past and been a little disappointed, but not with this one! The front screen is useful, clear, and fun for social events - friends really like taking photos of themselves with it - so you tend to capture genuine smiles with it. The huge 3.5" touch screen on the back is very good - better than a lot of touch-screens on mobile phones! And the way you can tilt the camera to choose modes and scroll through photos is quite neat once you get used to it. (Although it can be confusing for people who want to switch from photo to video mode, and don't know how to do it).

    The battery life was a little disappointing as I could only get about 100 - 140 shots on one charge. Luckily the ability to charge the camera through the USB cable helps combat this, because every time you transfer pictures from the camera to your computer you are charging the camera again.

    The camera is very stylish - and looks much better in real life than in the pictures - although there isn't much of a hand grip and it's a little slippery at times so use the wrist strap is highly recommended. The lens is good, providing a decent wide angle lens and a good amount of zoom, and image quality is generally good. The only downside for me was that the camera uses MicroSD cards which are small and fiddly compared to normal SD cards. A case isn't provided and I would highly recommend you invest in one, as well as a screen cleaning cloth as it quickly attracts fingerprints.
