This frame is mains powered, 480x234 resolution. It runs slideshows (at three speeds: ~3s, 10s, 60s) of your pictures with numerous transition effects, and can also display a digital clock - even overlaying the time on your pictures if you choose. The slideshow can play all photos in one folder, or all folders, in order or on shuffle. The gadget can be set to resume what it was doing, so once it's set up you need only switch it on to resume your slideshow - great if you want to plug it into a timer switch. The screen is (adjustably) bright and clear, viewable from a good range of angles (though rapidly darkening from angles below horizontal). It is freestanding but not wall-mountable. The manual is cursory but the menus are not hard to figure out.

The build is robust with easy to use buttons and the frame can take USB sticks and SD cards; however, the inbuilt 120MB of memory is likely to be ample - I squeezed 430 pictures into just a tenth of that! Uploading pictures from PC is straightforward using the supplied USB cable: the onboard memory can be managed just like a USB stick or hard drive.

There is an inbuilt feature to resize your photos as they upload, but I haven't tried this and would distrust it. To get the best results it will be necessary to crop your photos to the appropriate size and aspect ratio, since most digital photos are 'naturally' in 4:3 ratio. This is much easier using batch photo processing software (eg. Phatch on Linux or Easy Thumbnails on Windows, both free online). It's also worth noting that whilst the pixel aspect ratio is 480/234=2.05, the physical screen's aspect ration is about 155mm/86mm=1.79. The upshot is that you should batch-process your photos not only to the correct resolution, but also first scaling the vertical to 87% - otherwise people end up looking tall and thin.

It's not disastrous if this stuff is beyond your ken, just a little imperfect; this is still a great little screen for the money. But if you can set up a batch processing routine to make these adjustments your photos will look their best - and take up least space so that you can get more pictures in the memory. If you're not bothered about huge screen size, playing video or wall-mounting, this is as good a bargain as you'll find.
