I hope I am one of many more customers who will now rate this product with a score it deserves.

As other customers have commented on, the software update that runs when the unit is first installed does NOT fix all the bugs with the unit. When I first used the unit it had problems recording the whole broadcast and would often cut the end off.

This was easily fixed by downloading the firmware update to USB stick from the Samsung web site - search for the product and then go to the support section.

I am now very happy with the unit performance, having compared the user interface with the Humax unit, this is much more modern and stylish and very easy to use. The HD quality is far better than Virgin Media and delivers 1080p perfectly as opposed to 720p that V Box delivers.

Please be patient and read all the relevant information regarding software fixes etc.

This is a new review based on the new software released for this box on the 23rd June 2011 Version 4.0.296 followed by my old review for reference.

This software update has now made this a valid choice for the purchase of a FreeSat+ box but it has taken Samsung nearly three months to achieve this.

It still has two bugs introduced with this software release which are not major but do require fixing.

If two episodes of the same series follow each other and are recorded by a series link e.g. Batman on ITV4 or Family Guy on the BBC the unit will not stop recording one of them till hours later (if the second tuner is free it seems to record the second episode correctly and another copy several hours long).
Because it does not stop recording if you have other planned recording/s which are on during this time they are not recorded or you only get the end.

If you playback a recording still being made and stop playback the resume information is not saved.

Otherwise all bugs listed below seem to have been fixed.

Some Product Shortfalls / Enchantment Requests in my humble opinion to make the product better.

Media player only shows the first 100 matching tracks or artists when browsing from a DLNA server (my TV can list all such media).

If a recording is not made for what ever reason no notification is saved to advise you the recording was missed or failed.

No option to create manual timers or adjust program pre and post recording time.

No warning message that the unit will change channel to make a second recording.

In Library view, a new recording indicator for series link recordings without having to open each folder.

I read all the reviews, and foolishly trusted to Samsung to fix the reported bugs, as I wanted the machine to fit in with my Samsung TV and Blue-Ray player (BD-C5500).

I took delivery 23 Dec 2011. I connected it up to the Internet and left the machine to update its firmware. Like others (see the product's support forum on the Samsung UK site) I got approximately 3 months good service out of this device, and then the machine "lost" all the recorded programmes (the "Library" as the machine likes to term the set of recorded programmes). This seemed to coincide with the hard drive reaching 80% full. The firmware (0.39/1.43) and software (005.000.0300) are the latest available according to both the built-in software update option and the Samsung UK website. As the problem seemed related to hard drive usage (or remaining free capacity) I've tried turning on the auto-erase function and also reducing the size of the timeshift buffer to free up some space, but this doesn't work. Samsung seem to only suggest a device reset, which will not prevent the problem from reoccurring. I've already lost all my programmes once now, I don't feel inclined to trust the device again.

In general I'd suggest Amazon users pay careful attention to reports of software problems with Samsung products, and treat with caution any claims that the problems are fixed.

Had this for about 6 weeks now, have done all updates. I purchased this to replace Sky as I no longer wanted to pay monthly but would have missed the recording facilities. Love the box, find it easy to use, picture is great, set up was straightforward and once connected to the internet it updated to the latest version.

The downside is that the recording facility doesn't have an overrun so if a show runs a bit late you can lose the finish, and on 2 of my first 3 recordings I missed the climax of the show. I must admit since then I have made many successful and complete recordings with only one other ending chopped however as the end of a program nears you can't help but wonder if you are going to see it all!

A big upside is that I tried to record 3 things at once was given a clear message AND offered another viewing of the programme to record instead which then worked perfectly and you can record two channels at once and view a third though the choices are limited.

Would I buy it again, yes I would, if they fixed the start / End time issue (by adding a minute or 2 at the start and end like sky / bt vision do?) then this would be a clear 5 star product.
