Good points = (1) Arrived promptly after order (2) Looks very pretty.
Bad points = Bloody thing doesn't work with my Mac. I've been searching for an external disk drive to work with my G4 (running 10.4.11) for a while. This is the second machine I'm going to have to return to Amazon after reading online that it was Mac compatible. Not best pleased to say the least, especially considering that it says that this piece of kit would work with Macs with OS of 10.4.6 upwards.

I think the problem might be that my CPU is 1.5GHz and in very tiny print of the back of the box it says the minimum CPU requirement is 1.6GHz. Thing is, you're not to know that until you take delivery of it... or read this review.

Item arrived in good time. brand new slick shiny piano/gloss black with nero essentials software. Item is light and not particularly noisy

Burner was instantly recognised by my N110 samsung netbook via 2 usb port power supply. I was unble to get the bundled software to load on my netbook nor use preloaded Roxio buring software to create a disc on my desktop PC so this one was a dud for me.

2/5 for style over substance.
5/5 to amazon customer service. Return and refund was effortless.

I have bought a lot of Samsung gear in the past and this is my first dissapointment.

I needed a CD/DVD player for travelling to go with my netbook and looking at all the reviews I chose this one. It gets shoved in all sorts of corners, travels well, doesn't mind being tipped all over the place and is very steady - it has been 100% reliable so far and extremely useful. Highly recommended.

The actual product itself is really good.

However it took me hours to work it because if you have 'Windows 7 Starter' Microsoft have crippled the media player so it does not work to make you upgrade to the full WIndows 7 version. So it did not recognise the device, I was gutted I thought it didnt work.

I know now that it was Microsofts media player, but this was easy to solve by downloading 'VLC Media Player' which is free and plays all formats. SO there is no need to upgrade.

I bought this after buying an LG drive which would not work as it was not compatible.

I have got a MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) with two usb ports.

This has got Mac compatible plastered all over it but still it does not work. Occasionally it will work and then tell me it is drawing too much power and shut down. The drive comes with a USB cable with two usb connectors at one end (I presume because it requires a bit of power) and a mini usb at the other to plug into the DVD drive. The problem is that the supplied USB lead is too short to be able to plug in both USB ends on a Mac (as they are either side of the keyboard), so you need a USB extension cable to connect both (which I have).

So I plugged both ends in, the other to the DVD drive and thought simple! The brand new "Office for Mac" disk just went round and round and would not do anything. So i tried again, re-insert disk and got the same result. I like to think I'm not completely incompetent, although I suspected I was doing something wrong. So I tried plugging the USB leads via every imaginable variation with three different USB extension leads. Always the same result. I then tried plugging both of the USB ends into a USB hub, but again it would not work. I tried various disks, including Software and DVDs in various connection combinations and nothing would work.

I then looked on the box and re-read the specs: Mac OSX 10.4.6 - I'm running 10.5.8 (and if this would allow me would load 10.6!)
The one thing it does say is that "normal operation is not guaranteed when using a usb hub or unspecified cables". This renders it useless for a MacBook Pro with only one USB connection per side and a supplied cable that cannot reach both.

Avoid and perhaps try to find one with it's own power source?

Not a bad device if you're buying it to play DVDs when travelling. I use it with a Samsung Netbook and find it almost perfect. An unexpected bonus was its ability to play multi region DVDs, something I wasn't expecting without downloading a hack. I'm not sure how it slipped past the big movie studios, who try to discourage that sort of thing, but slip past it did.

The only downside is that it doesn't handle playing double sided DVDs well, if at all. So if you have a lot of box sets that use the cheaper two sided DVDs, expect to be able to watch only the top side using this player. A strange oversight, and not one you'd expect, considering all DVD players these days can play double sided DVDs.

I've only had this for 2 days and it works with my HP mini netbook but it needs to be plugged in 2 USB ports and the wires aren't long- so make sure your laptop/netbook has 2 USB ports next to eachother, also the nero software on the CD that this product comes with took me ages to load onto my netbook but you don't really need the nero software
