    4.0 out of 5 stars A neat, highly-portable external CD/DVD writer (plus Nero 9 Essentials), 3 Feb 2010

This review is from: Samsung SE-S084C, External USB 2.0 Slimline 8X DVD Writer, Black (Personal Computers)
The last time I bought an external DVD writer it was longer and wider than a housebrick and of a similar weight. This little marvel couldn't be more different.

At just under 16x14x2cm approx, it lives up to its 'slimline' name and is a sleek, compact little unit that fulfills its promises. To use it, simply plug it into the USB port (one port or two for extra power) using the Y-shaped USB lead provided and it loads immediately using Windows XP/Vista/7. It is supplied with Nero 9 Essentials but can be used with any suite.

Although the PC specs list minimum 1.6GHz processor, mine works fine with the 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z520 installed in my Acer One 751 netbook.

Build quality is good but the casing is wholly plastic and quite brittle so it probably wouldn't survive being dropped or knocked about too much. It would be a good idea to allocate a pocket within a netbook/laptop carry bag such as this Belkin Bag for Netbooks or similar if you're planning to use it on the move.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big smile for Samsung!, 28 Feb 2010

This review is from: Samsung SE-S084C, External USB 2.0 Slimline 8X DVD Writer, Black (Personal Computers)
This is a cracking DVD writer. I spent a while trying to find a machine that did everything I wanted, but also at a reasonable price... in this machine I've found it (seems to do every type of DVD there is!). It also comes with a raft of bundled software.
Very easy to use, comes with a usb cable with two connectors for the usb port on your computer. One is data and power, the other is power only. I have two usb ports that are not normally used next to eachother so no problem there. Having no external power supply transformer means it really easy to carry in your laptop bag, so an ideal replacement for an ageing internal dvd drive!
It's also very fast and on the DVDs and CDs I've burned so far, no problems at all.
    Max write speeds: 8x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 6x DVD±R DL; 5x DVD-RAM, 4x CD-RW; max read speeds: 8x DVD-ROM/DL, 24x CD-ROM, 24x CD-RW; 160ms random access CD/DVD. It comes with a 2MB buffer so no buffer underrun problems, is nice a small (141x157x19mm) and only weighs 341g.
My only negative is that there is no soft cloth case included in the box so when you are on your travels you can keep it clean and tidy.
Overall this is a great buy, if you're in the market for one of these look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for use with a Samsung Netbook, 10 Feb 2010

Samsung SE-S084C, External USB 2.0 Slimline 8X DVD Writer, Black - I bought this drive to go with a Samsung N130 Netbook and they work perfectly together. I initially thought that the unit had been previously used as the top seemed rather scuffed - but there is a protective clear plastic film covering it and the surface underneath is a very very shiny piano black. It was so perfect I left the plastic film on for fear of spoiling it!

The drive comes supplied with a connecting cable which has a mini USB B plug one end to connect to the unit, and two standard USB plugs on the other end to connect to the laptop. It needs to use two USBs because it does not have its own mains power supply and draws all the power from the computer. The computers USB sockets need to be close to each other as the section of cable between the two plugs is very short; although an extension cable could be used Samsung do not guarantee it will work unless its one of theirs.

The drive is plug and play out of the box and comes with a Quick Installation Guide and a CD containing the user manual and the Nero 9 Essentials disc burning suite. It runs well on just USB power, and did not drain the Netbooks battery too much when the Netbook was not plugged in to the mains. The drive has a manual eject button - but needs power connected to operate. Make sure to remove your disc before shutting down!

Made in the Philippines the drive is a combination of Toshiba and Samsung technology, it seems very well constructed and looks good too. The shiny piano black finish will match Samsung's earlier range of laptops more than the matt black look of the current models, and it is also available in a full range of colours from some retailers. Slim and compact the SE-S084C is not the cheapest external DVD drive available but a good product for the price and is recommended.
