As laptops get smaller and smaller and companies introduce more netbook ranges one of the first devices to go is the DVD drive. Many small laptops and netbooks now have no DVD drive whatsoever and so you may find an external one is an essential purchase. This is an ultra slim model from Samsung which has full 8x DVD functionality and it will burn DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW formats.
The biggest drawback to netbooks is their lack of an optical drive. This makes it hard to load software from CD or DVD, playback audio CDs or even watch a DVD movie. An external DVD drive makes a great addition to just about any netbook. Not only does it allow the system to install software, but it can also allow it to play DVD movies or even burn CDs or DVDs.
The Samsung SE-S084B is a relatively low cost slim DVD writer than runs off of USB 2.0 ports. Writing speeds will be a bit slower if it uses just a single USB 2.0 port but using two ports will give it the same recording and playback speeds of traditional laptop DVD burners. It includes USB cables an Nero recording software.
I have used this item with my Samsung NC10 netbook for over 6 months with no problems. It's fast, I really like it. it's quiet and doesn't get very warm.
Just simply plug it to the USB 2.0 port to get power and no need to worry about the AC Adaptor. Nero Software Suite (NERO Burning ROM, NERO Showtime) included. Make sure you upgrade the firmware after receiving it.
I was surprised that it took 2 usb ports, but I guess that compensates for the fact that there's no power cord. No problem, if you have two usb ports, side by side like the Samsung NC10.

The last time I bought an external DVD writer it was longer and wider than a housebrick and of a similar weight. This little marvel couldn't be more different.
At just under 16x14x2cm approx, it lives up to its 'slimline' name and is a sleek, compact little unit that fulfills its promises. To use it, simply plug it into the USB port (one port or two for extra power) using the Y-shaped USB lead provided and it loads immediately using Windows XP/Vista/7. It is supplied with Nero Essentials but can be used with any suite just like any other DVDRW drive.
Although the PC specs list minimum 1.6GHz processor, mine works fine with the 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z520 installed in my Acer One 751 netbook.
Build quality is good but the casing is wholly plastic and quite brittle so it probably wouldn't survive being dropped or knocked about too much. It would be a good idea to allocate a pocket within a netbook/laptop carry bag such as Belkin Neoprene Messenger Bag for Netbooks up to 12.1-Inch Jet/Cabernet if you're planning to use it on the move.

I purchased this unit as my new Samsung N 140 Netbook did not have a DVD Rom Drive. It arrived before my Netbook and hving now used it a number of times, it works extremely well.

Very poor item, cannot recommend
This is the worst DVD/CD writer I've ever used.

Excellent Recorder
This is an excellent burner despite the incompetent 1-star review. I would trust a Samsung burner any day over an LG (Qubz) one as being sold elsewhere on this website. Read more
