I did a fair amount of research when I wanted to buy an external HDD. A number of friends had WD Passport drives and I also looked at the Seagate options available.
Firstly, this drive is small and reasonably light. It came with a plastic pouch and USB cable. The pouch itself is a nice touch - designed to look like leather, but it doesnt cover all 4 edges of the HDD - if you drop it on the wrong corner, you'll end up damaging the device. It's also worth noting that the case doesnt have any storage space for the cable, so if you want to keep the drive totally safe with the cable then you'll need to buy a proper case.
The top half of the drive is red, bottom half is black, with shiny red sides (luckily doesnt look as bad as it's sounds!). The only other visible bit is the Samsung logo - luckily no Terminator graphics on the case! The plastic pouch is in a darker red colour, to match!
The drive has a mini USB connector, which is great - a number of mobile phones also have this port, which means that you'll be able to use the same cable to connect your PC/laptop with the HDD, mobile phone, etc.
Build quality is good, the drive has a blue LED to indicate when it has power, and when it's being accessed. Installing the drive couldnt be easier - just plug it in! Samsung do not try to force you to install their software.
The drive includes:
1. Automatic backup software; I haven't tried this yet, but it was easy to install
2. Encrypting software, where you can encrypt part of your drive. This is good, although note that your PC will need this software installed if you want to read the encrypted area
3. The Terminator Salvation movie - this needs to be run directly from the HDD, and comes in executable form (no external media player software is needed). Picture quality is good, although I'll probably remove the movie after I've watched it.
The software on the drive takes up 680mb, and the movie filesize is just over 2mb.
The paper instruction manual is very, very basic - all it really does is tell you how to plug in the drive... but there is an electronic manual on the drive which is much, much better.
Overall, I'm really pleased with this HDD - build quality is good, the device itself is small and very quiet and the software that comes with it is a nice touch. It does not suffer from the loose port problems that seem to happen with the latest WD Passport machines, and is smaller than other similar external HDDs.
The only downside is that it's a little bit more expensive than other manufacturers, but I've heard that Samsung customer support is meant to be amongst the best. Would have got 5 stars if the pouch was better - although note that most other manufacturers don't even supply a case!
